In the world of chauffeuring a gig doesn’t get any bigger than the one Jim Clark from York was just assigned. He was invited to drive a vehicle which would make up part of the US President, Barack Obama’s motorcade at the G20-Summit in Pittsburgh. The 60 year old who usually drives limos around the York area jumped at the opportunity and took part in the prestigious event last week.
The York based company who employee Mr Clark as a chauffeur also have connections with a branch in Europe. A Pittsburgh Transportation Company were enlisted to take care of the President’s travel during his visit. They subcontracted the York company to supply a chauffeur, which is how the opportunity of a lifetime landed in the lap of the chauffeur from York.
Mr Clark said of the project “I lucked out. I was in the right place at the right time.” The vehicle which he was assigned to drive was a blacked out van. He chauffeured members of the presidential press coup in the second half of the huge motorcade. The 60-year-old commented on the high level of security which surrounded them saying he’d never seen so many police, military and security personnel in his life.
Although the assignment was a great honour for Mr Clark, the job was more stressful than his usual work. He was under strict instructions to stay within a certain distance of his vehicle at all times as well as having strident guidelines to follow on how to drive within the motorcade. After the excitement of the G20 Summit, this chauffeur is happy to have been a part of it but equally as content to get back behind the wheel of his limo.
