Call For Meeting Over Threat To Jobs At Coventry Black Cab Firm LTI

A city councillor has called for an urgent meeting with bosses at Coventry black cab manufacturer LTI.

Coun Gary Ridley, cabinet member for city development, has written to the firm, in Holyhead Road, Coundon, requesting a meeting to discuss ways the council can help to keep the business afloat after the Telegraph revealed yesterday bosses had refused to rule out job losses.

“I have called for a meeting with the company to see what they have in mind and see if there is any way we can offer them support,” he said.

“As a council we want to keep LTI in Coventry and if there is going to be redundancies we need to know about it so that we can help those employees that will be affected.

“It is really in our interest to keep manufacturing alive in Coventry. We lost Peugeot a couple of years ago and have lost (jobs at) Jaguar two or three times so it is important that we do everything we can to safeguard jobs in the city.”

Parent company of LTI, Manganese Bronze, announced earlier this week that vehicle sales had dropped nine per cent in the last eight months and that the business was facing some tough decisions.

Bosses said that restructuring of its manufacturing operations and redundancies were possible options to help the company save money, which means that about 250 jobs at the Coventry plant could be at risk.

Coun Ridley added: “I recognise the situation the company is in, but I think most people want to know the position on jobs and about the future of the production plant in Coventry.

“What LTI has said could mean a reduction in staff or closing the plant. But the current level of uncertainty is not going to help anyone.

“I recognise they are a private company and the decision is theirs, not ours, but that is why I would like to talk to discuss ways we can work together.”

A 90-day consultation process with staff and stakeholders is now under way to get their views and ideas on ways the firm can increase profitability.

And at about £25,000 maximum price with cheaper running costs.
The problem at LTI is the product they make.
Yes the recession has taken it's toll,as on all businesses,but the VITO was lauched in the middle of a recession and is selling.
LTI take your head out of the sand!

With there crap build quality, under bonnet fires, and gearboxes that don't like to move the cab, and they eat radiators faster than they can be produced, is it any wonder we don't want them, but in most areas until they get there act together and comply with the E7 ruling they are stuck with them

The van chassis is produced in France, but the taxi manufacture is in the UK!!

And I believe Mr Justice Blake also referred to it as a taxi!!

If that's good enough for a judge it's good enough for me.

Yes your right CC but not all of them but the workers made redundant could be taken on to meet the unexpected demand that's if they promise no more shoddy workmanship

There is another court case that clearly states that if European manufacturers wish to make taxis for London all they have to do is build them to the standard required

Well with this new found embracing of the European Community I hope these fine gentlemen fully support Europe now, I personally cant wait for the UK to lose its current opt out in respect with immigration, visa's and asylum.

A European President seems a good idea too, the Queen is a bit old and I want to see President Blair!
