Police appeal for help to find dead taxi driver's missing mobile phone

DETECTIVES probing the death of taxi driver Stuart Ludlam are searching for his missing mobile phone and taxi radio handset.

The father-of-three was found dead in the boot of his cab near Cromford Railway Station two weeks ago, having suffered gunshot wounds.

Police are now trying to trace the 43-year-old's white Nokia 3410 mobile phone and the radio handset, which was missing from inside his taxi.

Chief Superintendent Peter Lewis, who is in charge of policing in the Derbyshire Dales and High Peak, said his officers were pleased with the number of people who had already come forward to help in the investigation.

He said: "The support we have received from members of the public has been excellent and I would appeal to them once more to help us find these items, which could assist with the investigation."

Mr Ludlam, of Darley Dale, was discovered at about 12.40pm on Thursday, September 17, on the approach road to the railway station, in Lea Road.

On Thursday, 61-year-old Colin Cheetham appeared before Derby magistrates charged with Mr Ludlam's murder.

Cheetham, of no fixed abode, was arrested in Ripley on Sunday. He was remanded in custody and will next appear at Nottingham Crown Court on a date to be fixed.

Police are still trying to trace a group of ramblers who were seen at Cromford train station on the morning of Mr Ludlam's death. The group consisted of men and women, all wearing outdoor clothing.

The investigation team is also still appealing for the driver of a yellow hackney-style taxi, seen in Cromford on the day of the incident, to come forward as they could hold important information.

Officers say a man of Eastern European or Turkish appearance, who was seen near the station in the hour leading up to Mr Ludlam's death, has now been ruled out of inquiries.

But one of the men to whom police want to speak is of a large build with short hair.

He was wearing a light-coloured baseball cap and light top. He is in his late-30s to early-40s, about 5ft 10ins tall and clean-shaven.

The other was of medium build, with dark shortish hair and in his mid-40s. He wore dark clothing.

Officers have made 12 arrests in connection with Mr Ludlam's death.

A 27-year-old man and a man and woman, both 31, arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit murder, have been questioned and released on bail.

Three men, aged 18, 33 and 47, were arrested in Matlock. Another two, aged 17 and 23, were also arrested in Derby.

The 18-year-old was later released without charge, while the four others were bailed pending further inquiries. A 34-year-old man arrested in Derby was also released on bail.

A 32-year-old held in the city was released without charge. Police also took a 48-year-old Derby man into custody on September 18. He has been bailed.

Grim find by murder-probe officers

HUNDREDS of bottles of urine were discovered by police sent to arrest a man on suspicion of the murder of taxi-driver Stuart Ludlam.

They were found at a house in Waingroves, near Ripley, and were removed while officers carried out a search.

But, to the disgust of people living nearby, the plastic drinks bottles were then left in the street for five days.

Resident Lisa Shepherd said she was shocked to see them at the end of the road.

"There were Coca Cola bottles, Lucozade bottles and smaller ones all up against the fence," she said.

"The bottles all had their tops on but it was pretty disgusting. I have a young child and it is not what you want to see near your house."

David Pacey, also of Waingroves Road, said: "I saw them all there, but I had no idea what was inside them."

Police say "several hundred" bottles and jars were found at a house in Waingroves Road, Waingroves, on Sunday, September 27, where Colin Cheetham was arrested.

The 61-year-old has since appeared at court charged with the murder of Mr Ludlam, 43, who was found dead in the boot of his cab near Cromford Railway Station two weeks ago.

The father-of-three is believed to have died from a gunshot wound.

Derbyshire police said the plastic drinks bottles were moved to allow officers to carry out a thorough search of the house, but a "breakdown in communication" meant they were left outside afterwards.

The force has since apologised for the blunder and has removed the bottles.

Superintendent Gary Parkin said: "I would like to make a public apology to all the residents who have been subjected to the sight and smell of these bottles. They should not have been left there."

Supt Parkin added: "In all my years in policing, it still amazes me what you find and the officers at the house were faced with an extraordinary situation.

"But they should have been removed sooner. It is our responsibility.

"We now have systems in place to make sure nothing like this ever happens again."

Officers are still searching for Mr Ludlam's missing mobile phone and radio handset. They also want to trace a yellow Hackney-style cab seen in the area at the time.

Police have also arrested 11 men and one woman, aged between 18 and 48, who have either been bailed pending further inquiries or released without charge.

That could form the basis of an insanity plea if it ever goes that far

Fresh appeal over taxi driver's death

Image
POLICE APPEAL: Top, a champagne-coloured Vauxhall Omega like the one police want to trace. Above, Stuart Ludlam.

Officers investigating the death of taxi driver Stuart Ludlam have launched a fresh appeal for information.

Detectives are urging anyone who saw a champagne-coloured Vauxhall Omega in the area on the day of his death to come forward. Mr Ludlam had been shot and was found in the boot of his taxi at Cromford Railway Station.

The Omega was seen parked at the station on the day he died on Thursday, September 17.

Police also want to speak to a group of ramblers, who were spotted close to where the 43-year-old's body was found as they could hold vital clues.

The group, made up of men and women, were seen during the morning just before Mr Ludlam was found dead in the boot of his Ford Focus at around 12.40pm.

Police are appealing to the public to help them trace Mr Ludlam's white Nokia 3410 mobile phone and his radio handset, which was missing from inside the taxi. Officers are also searching for the weapon used to shoot Mr Ludlam.

Chief Supt Pete Lewis, who is leading the investigation, said: "We are extremely pleased by the number of people who have passed on information by telephone and by stopping officers on patrol.

"The support we have received from members of the public has been excellent and I would appeal to them once more to help us find these items which could assist with the investigation."

The investigation team is also still appealing for the driver of a yellow Hackney-style taxi, seen in Cromford on the day of the murder, to come forward as they could hold important information.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Derbyshire police on 0345 123 33 33 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

l On Thursday, October 1, a 61-year-old man appeared in court charged with Mr Ludlam's murder.

Colin Cheetham, who was arrested in Ripley on Sunday, September 27, appeared before magistrates in Derby.

He did not enter a plea and the case was adjourned.

Cheetham, of no fixed address, was remanded in custody and will next appear at Nottingham Crown Court on a date to be fixed.
