Cabbie banned after running red traffic light

A BURTON taxi driver has been banned from the road after running a red light.

Nasar Hussain, of Goodman Street, Burton, was disqualified from driving under the totting-up procedure after he flouted a red light in the town’s Union Street.

Peter Levy, defending, told Burton Magistrates’ Court: “He went through the red traffic light as it was just changing from amber to red. Unfortunately it was an error of judgement because he thought he was going too fast to stop so went over.”

Hussain, who drives for Local Taxis, based in Shobnall Street, already had 11 points on his licence and was banned despite pleading his case for exceptional hardship with the bench.

The 21-year-old said: “It was about 4am and as we were approaching the junction the customer in the back was being argumentative and I slightly lost my concentration and just as I turned back the light was turning amber and then red.”

He told the court losing his licence would result in him losing his job which would cause him and his family exceptional hardship.

Hussain admitted the offence and magistrates handed him three points on his licence and a sixmonth ban.

He was also ordered to pay a £115 fine, a £15 victim surcharge and £35 costs.

Presiding magistrate Christine Buntain said: “Three points on your licence means you’ve got more than 12 points. We’ve found no exceptional hardship in your case; you will be disqualified for six months.”

Call me cynical but it would appear this is a young boy racer type taxi driver and perhaps he will learn a valuable lesson but I doubt it. Having said that he's not the only one to have gone through a red light at silly o'clock in the morning, but, I just had to go to class to learn about the error of my ways

I'd have thought with 11 points on his license, if he had any sense at all, would have been driving more carefully.
