New driver here (so please be gentle - for now). I'm currently going through the process to get licensed for a Liverpool City hackney (passed Street Knowledge test, awaiting CRB and have got my medical next week).

I'm looking to get, preferably, a long collar which, in Liverpool appears to be around the £300 per week mark on average.

Can anyone let me know whether the settle would include insurance (with me as a named driver) or would it be on a case by case basis (i.e. some are with insurance and some without)?

Cheers in advance.

Don't know too much about your area but if I was to guess I would say the £300 includes insurance.

And car payment road tax and full maintenance

Why not apply for your own plate i know Liverpool still restrict but keep at them, you could tell them you want the first E7 licence :D

Is the £300 the weekly rent on a 24 hour cab?

If it is, then Liverpool cabbies must be raking it in.

At the moment in Brum the weekly rental on a 24 hour cab is £100 & they can't get enough drivers. God only knows what January will be like.

most long collars in liverpool with private owners are around £270 - £300. However, becuase your new to the trade you will have to work for a taxi cartel for about a year, due to insurance reasons. The big major ones like Gawiths, kellys charge around £330 per week long collar. I no longer drive taxis, but did for many years. i worked for Atkinsons taxis (moscow drive, stoneycroft, liverpool), old taxis but reliable.

Long collar is better than night or day collars. When you start your long collar get yourself a radio set, from either Davy Liver Cabs; or Merseycabs. work the cabs a few months before you do this. It is worth it, they have a lot of hospital contract work, so when working days work the hospitals.

when I was long collar, i worked monday to thursday day; and friday to saturday night. you will find that the weekend pays the settle. your settle includes insurance, repairs and maintenace. yuo will have to pay an excess of £500 for any major accidents.

good luck, its long hours, but can make a living.

That's still excessive £200 would be more than enough

Might get some work if it is, then perhaps not.

Cheers for this Edward, I'll give Gawiths a ring next week. I was looking to do the local supermarket during the days (there appears to be a regular clientele as the supermarket is in a residential area) - with maybe Friday morning, and then do Friday night as well as Saturday afternoon (the footy and all that) going through to Saturday night.

I've seen quite a few HC around Liverpool, with Merseycabs on the side. Would this be because they've rented the cab from them, or would it be due to them getting radio calls instead?

Work the cab s for a couple of months before you get a radio set. learnn the areas first. Merseyside cabs do not rent out taxis, only radio sets. Long collar for the radio set use to be around£ 25, don't know waht it is now.

work around the suprmarkets is a good idea during the day. Saturday is always busy when the football is on. Sunday night can be good too.

it will busy up to christmas, then goes quiet in January and feburary. Also, in summer (june, july, august) it goes quiet. people going on holidays, students go home, kid off school. you can still earn a living but will work more hours during theses months.

Gawiths long collar was £380, but I have been told it has been reduced to £330, beucase trade has dropped due to the recession. the best taxi compnay to work for is stanleys taxis on jamacia street, city centre. all his cabs are tx 3 or 4. however, he only has day collars or night collars. days are £175 and nights £235.

good luck
