Taxi drivers are snared in centre swoop

SIX private hire taxi drivers have been caught illegally picking up passengers in Rochdale town centre.

The drivers were snared as part of a late night operation carried out by council and police officers.

The 11.30pm to 5am crackdown concentrated on drivers picking up fares which had not been pre-booked.

Unlawful plying for hire is an offence under the Town Police Clauses Act 1847.

Private hire drivers can face prosecution if caught flouting the law.

Andy Glover, public protection manager for Rochdale Council said: "Not only is a criminal offence for a private hire driver to pick up passengers that have not pre-booked, it's a dangerous activity for the public to be taking part in.

"We always recommend that passengers plan their journey home in advance by booking a vehicle with a licensed firm.

"This is the safest and most convenient option for everyone."

Sergeant Brendan Walsh for Rochdale North Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: "The initiative came together following a number of complaints made relating to the number of private hire vehicles picking passengers up illegally.

"We are pleased with the results of the initiative and want them to send out a clear message to offenders that Greater Manchester Police and the council will seek to prosecute anyone committing such an offence."

A similar operation last year caught 30 drivers and led to 28 successful prosecutions.

Investigation are now continuing which may lead to further prosecutions.

In the big city's they mostly drive PH and don't give a feck about picking up unbooked fares, if they are caught they can get another ID just like that in there uncles cousins name 20 times removed
While we are on the subject how many fake ID drivers badges are there in circulation they are easy to make

You cannot use words like 'they' and when you mention the cab trade and PH trade you must remember which ethnic group make up the majority of the trade in a particular area........and in reflection which papers you read.
