Protest over taxi increase plan



A decision about increasing the number of taxis is due to be made later


Taxi drivers in Wolverhampton are protesting outside the civic centre about plans to increase the number of Hackney Carriage drivers in the city.

The city council said it wants to increase the number of licensed cab drivers from 129 to about 300 to help reduce queues for taxis at the weekend.

Taxi driver Kulwant Cheed said work had dried up as clubs and bars had shut.

He said: "If there was the work that's fair enough but we are struggling to make ends meet in the recession."

Councillors are due to decide later whether to give the plan their approval.

A sound set of proposals in my view.

Three year licenses make a lot of sense, equality amongst drivers isn't such a bad thing as well.

But what are the doom mongers on TDO going to say about a huge increase of 37 plates since de-limitation in a licensing area of 236,000 people.

I'd hope they'd argue for the point that matters most Sussex...that there should be enough cabs to serve the public, which in this case, as shown by a survey, may be up to 300 (with hopefully, adequate rank space for them of course )

All Wolverhampton proves is that we have another example of how not to do things correctly. As I've stated before, an "older" vehicle doesn't have to be an unsafe one. (Sadly, some on here think that "older" means "shed", which it does not ). It's a question of allowing/having a reasonable age limit, with strict quality controls...and enforcing it! This applies by the way, whether you have a limited, or de-limited area.

In the Wolverhampton case, it could be further argued that, had adequate unmet demand surveys been done correctly through the years...and licences issued accordingly, with only reasonable restrictions (rather than the only new vehicles policy adopted), they may have had the "correct" number of vehicles needed to serve the public, but without having to de-limit.

Anyway, regardless of anyone's standpoint on de-reg, this situation will at least be worth watching to see how things pan out...by both the trade and also, no doubt, other LA's!

It seems to me the LA's policy of new vehicles only has changed because people are saying they couldnt afford the new cab.

Perhaps if they had the same rule for PH then PH numbers wouldnt be as high?

I personally think a 5 year policy on first license is too lax and the place will get flooded...what interests me is how they picked 5.....why not 1,2,3 or 4? Which scientific method did they choose?

So the cabbies say they are skint, and the council says it needs more plates? maybe so for 2 hours of a week, but how about the other 38 official hours of £4.80 ph, the longer it goes on the more it's becoming a remove the 10p from inside the glass without touching the glass sort of thing, time for you to go look elsewhere Mark, it's no good you baseing opinion of the whole country from a seat amongst the monied ppl of fashionable sussex county.

Wolves is just down the road from Brum & we know a few that work there.

Would you work WEEKEND NIGHTS for an extra 50 pence per hiring & put up with the agro & racist abuse that most of these drivers have to on a very regular basis?
