I have just bought a 'P' Reg 1997 Fairway Driver ex-Taxi that has literally just come out of service the day before yesterday.

I absolutely love driving the vehicle but there are a few things that I am wondering if anyone can help me with...

1) There is slight play in the steering wheel when going in a straight line, is this the usual can this be fixed and if so is it a big job?

2) The back passenger doors are locked and I cannot open them by using the key supplied. When I bought it off the taxi driver he said something about the central locking not working, could this be the problem as I have to leave the windows unlocked to open the window from the outside to access the internal handle, this is for either of the passenger doors. The one door did open when I bought it off the last owner but he just used to leave the passenger door open when it was parked up.

3) Finally... Boot lock, the key that I use for the fuel cap doesn't lock the boot (which I was told it did - should of checked it when I bought it) will I have to get another boot lock if so does anyone know where from.

Thanks for any advice in advance.

Ant

I think there is a nut on the steering box you can tighten up, or the king pins have worn, as for the central locking have you checked the fuses you should be able to get everything from taxi mart very cheap

Hello,welcome to the fairway 'club'.
Steering with a box is always more vague than the more accurate steering racks a inch or so play in the wheel is perfectly OK.
Can you hear the locks in the back doors click when you operater the key?.If not have a look where the wires go into the doors, sometimes they crack or break.
The keys for the boot might be different to the lock on the petrol cap,the barrels can be replaced with a key to suit or it shouldn't cost a fortune to replace the whole assembly with a secondhand one that has a key with it.Try wiggling the key first,if not there are a few breakers on ebay.

One.. check the Bolt's that hold the sterling box on to the chassis( make sure they haven't snapped) Second... make sure the bracket which the steering box fits on to has not started to break away from the chassis.... if these are OK check all track rod ends and then top and bottom ball joints... next top and bottom wishbone bushes... if all these are ok check the bottom dogs leg on the steering box to make sure it has not come loose.. if this is ok than there is on the top of the steering box a dampening screw..... you have to slacken off the securing nut and then adjust with an Alan Key.... but do not over adjust.....and then get it tracked.
