The problem as I see it for you Mr Skippy41, is that the bus companies will be buying vehcles to license as PHVs, use them on new rural bus routes that don't exist at the moment - the very journeys that you might be doing for customers at present in your taxi as a cab fare - & doing you out of a living.

And before you say, "Ah, but the drivers have to be licensed", there are loads of licensed drivers out there that would jump at being employed in such a way.

Hi BC

Things went reasonably well, my head tends to get up my ar*e at conference because I'm working.

Next years conference is in Sunderland......so I guess that's technically nearer

And I suppose the year after that it's in The Hebrides.

Don't you ever visit the Midlands or near Midlands anymore with your annual road-show.

We tend to visit areas with a strong NTA membership

I didn't know the NTA was now that type of organisation.

rend (rnd)
v. rent (rnt) or rend·ed, rend·ing, rends
v.tr.
1. To tear or split apart or into pieces violently. See Synonyms at tear1.
2. To tear (one's garments or hair) in anguish or rage.
3. To tear away forcibly; wrest.
4. To pull, split, or divide as if by tearing: "Chip was rent between the impulse to laugh wildly and a bitterness that threatened hot tears" (Louis Auchincloss).
5. To pierce or disturb with sound: a scream rent the silence.
6. To cause pain or distress to: tales that rend the heart.
v.intr.
To become torn or split; come apart.

What do you all get up to at your conference?

I cant see how it pays, once youve picked your route you have to honour it for 3 months even if it proves to be a dead loss. are the PHV/Buses Subsidised to guarantee their profitability. The councils spare minibuses having been doing this kind of thing around here but they never seem to have any passengers on board..how can that pay???

Some of the routes run on a book the day before basis..if no one needs transport then they dont run...I guess the driver must get fecked about something awful..then add to that the potential of having to ZIG ZAG about willy nilly over the whole area of coverage for just 3 passengers...

Nahh...think I'l give this one a miss...for now anyway...see if its a go'er or not first.

This has been available to Hackneys since The Transport Act 1985 was enacted & never took off to my knowledge. Perhaps it might have in one or two rural areas.

So I think you're a good judge & I can't see it taking off for PHVs either.

I suggest you think about a PHV getting a route authorised by the traffic commissioners.

I suggest you think about that PHV being outside of the scope of licensing whilst it is used as a bus.

I suggest you think about what the PHV will do in respect of bus passes.

I suggest you think what the PH will reclaim in terms of the fuel subsidy.

Same as it is for a Hackney; what's the problem?

Your last two words in your first suggestion answer this one.

My guess is that they will take them & get reimbursed by subsidy, otherwise what would be the point of running a bus service with a PHV.

I would expect their claims for fuel subsidy to be scrutinised & audited.

What are your views on these queries?

My views are that the HC trade have had this opportunity for a great many years and never taken it up. I predict it will be taken up by numerous PH firms.

Bearing in mind how hopeless VOSA actually are, and how overstretched they are, I envisage PH running up and down bus routes picking up passengers.

Should be pretty handy in Brum town centre

I think if we do the maths it'll be more like;

250,000
x
1800
=
450,000,000

Taxi trade nil.......leeches four hundred and fifty million

It was a very entertaining, yet one sided, game.
