After a three year campaign by Cabs Direct and a few drivers ,Norwich City Council yesterday changed their policy on purpose built taxis to allow Peugeot E7's to be used as Hackney Carraiges. There were conditions put in place ,one being only the series 2 can be licensed(the type that was presented to the council.
More on this to follow when all conditions are made clear.

New style taxi for Norwich could get the go-ahead

A new-style black cab could soon be seen on Norwich's roads after a taxi driver was granted permission to use his vehicle in the city - however the council is still concerned about punters recognising it as a taxi.

Taxi driver Paddy Keenaghan applied to use the new Peugeot E7 as a hackney carriage that people could flag down and claimed it would be more environmentally friendly, cheaper and have better disabled access.

As the E7 did not meet the current hackney carriage vehicle specification, Mr Keenaghan asked the council to amend or make exception to the current specification.

His application was discussed by the council's regulatory committee at Blackfriars Hall, St Andrew's Plain in Norwich and councillors agreed to revise the existing hackney carriage vehicle specification to extend the maximum acceptable dimensions as necessary to enable the licensing of the applicant's vehicle as a hackney carriage.

Councillors will now instruct the Head of Legal, Regulatory and Democratic Services to review the remainder of the existing hackney carriage vehicle specification to bring a report to a further meeting of the committee.

The council has also asked that the issue of recognisability be considered in the report, which could focus on the colour of the vehicle and whether it would need to include a badge or livery on it so punters could recognise it as a taxi.

A previous application from Mr Keenaghan to licence the E7 had been refused by the council two years ago. Following that determination Mr Keenaghan sought a judicial review of the committee's decision, but these proceedings were withdrawn in July as part of the terms of settlement and the council agreed to consider a fresh application for this particular vehicle.

Excellent news.

We hope to have a similar choice with the Metropolitan COF sometime in the near future.

Choice is good, choice should make LTI wake up.

I hope.

I wonder how many PH peugeot eurobuses there are?

That aside, the part time job of delivering bread should see it being used well.
