Our L/A,under pressure from the taxi trade, has put out to consultation a proposal for a new rank in the heart of the town , to local residents. It is on a street full of pubs / takeaways and two private hire offices . The proposed rank being opposite one of the P/H offices.

The council has come back to the trade and said no to the rank because of the feedback from the consultation. Is the general public allowed to see the results of these consultations ? And does the council have a legal right to adhere to the consensus of the residents ( cant be more than a dozen residential flats) in the area?

I'll check and get back but my initial thoughts from around here is that ranks are not subject to consultation.

It's a case of a TRO being advertised in the press and on a lamp post and then objections coming in.

The council then consider the objections at a meeting and the trade has an opportunity to support the rank.

The decision is then with councillors.

Councils must consult, but they are not bound to accept the consensus, if they have good reason to ignore it.

But with ranks they nearly always do.

If you want to see the stats from the consultation just put in a FoI Act request, and you must receive what you ask for within 20 working days.
