VICTORY IN GMB ELECTION

The Socialist Labour Party sends its warmest congratulations to SLP member Ron Waugh on being re-elected to the position of President of the GMB (Manufacturing Section) at last week’s GMB Conference in Plymouth, despite strong opposition from the union’s right-wing. Ron will now serve a four year term as President.

On Tuesday 10th June the Conference was addressed by invited speaker Arthur Scargill who spoke on the acute economic and political issues facing trade unionists in this present period. Scargill’s forty-five minute contribution was followed by a ten-minute standing ovation from the assembled GMB delegates.

Ron Waugh commented, “I see my election success as a victory for the SLP and its policies. I thought Arthur’s Congress contribution was magnificent and it was an honour to have him here.”

Through leading by example the SLP is confident that similar success throughout the trade union movement can be achieved in the near future.

15th June 2008.

Dont seem to recall Mr Scargill being a member of the Conservative party

you will also be aware that the GMb describe themselves as socialists, in much the same way as the USSR did.CC

I'm still waiting for you to equate how the GMB are the same as the USSR

I could say I think they were responsible for the deaths of millions of people, but that would be wrong, but to suggest the word socialist is what I mean would be correct. Dont be embarassed comrade.

I'm not embarassed my friend, I just don't agree with the loose terms of your referring to the GMB and USSR as being similar

TBH does it really matter what political views are taken by a union?

Folks pay their dues for protection, not out of political love.

I suspect there are many people in the GMB who will not vote Labour next election, and many who will.

The issue is will this union protect my livelihood, and if the answer is yes, then it doesn't really matter if they are fans of Pol Pot etc etc.

That said it's a bit silly slagging off the Queen and supporting the IRA if you want members from the taxi and private hire trade to join up.

I tend to agree, but giving a portion of subs....however minute to a political party?

[-X

That being said, I still look back with pity how this country has, due to its politicians, made us depend on the 'global' market, no coal, no gas, no oil, the armed forces reduced to begging from the US, the navy with a few dingys, the air force with obsolete aircraft, and the decline of our economic base which means we no longer have the trained labour availble to build ships, get coal and so on - if and when WW3 comes along we are completely f*cked.

I'm sure this union will protect your livelihood so long as it doesn't affect it's livihood. I remember the assistance given to the Liverpool dockers by the T&G in 1995 when they quite clearly sold their members down the Mersey

I suggest you just google Liverpool docks dispute 1995 and perhaps then click on the 'Neon Black' link. It's brief but true to the opinions held about this. Alternatively google 'film scab Liverpool docks'

Every Union member has the option of opting out of the political levy if they so wish

It was a two and a half year campaign for reinstatement, which was isolated and then strangled by the Transport and General Workers Union. The end finally came in February 1998, when the sacked dockers accepted a settlement of £28,000 from MDHC - just £85 per head.

As I said previously they were sold down the river by the unions and it is my belief that most unions, if push comes to shove, will save their own ar$es rather than that of it's paying members
