more garbage from a saloon op hoping to to keep his cheap cab on the road,(open the town and we wont be making money and all the cabs will rundown vectras etc) i visit perth regulary and have yet to see a newish cab, compare that to dundees 60 odd 26 grand seven seaters plus tx,s ,before deregulation it was 90 per cent heapers, plus 1 tx,the letter writer claims to be in the buisness for 45 years, the earliest you get a badge here is 25 which makes him/her at least 70 ,i wonder what age of cab the op owns and the hours they work?im thinking at least a 4 year old cab 2 drivers and just sit on your axse

Perhaps someone should write to the rag and point out those facts.

I wish people would be more honest and say 'we don't more cabs as we believe it will effect our income', and stop saying it will lead to the end of the world.

The taxi letter is typical of anybody faced with de-reg, but, I have to say I found the letter regarding the children being a drain on the planet quite an interesting slant on the usual 'save the environment' cr@p :D

Sir,—While unable to match Ian Gow’s 45 years in the Perth taxi trade (December 29), I nonetheless take issue with his claim that quality and safety is dependent on the extra income derived from limiting vehicle numbers.

It is easy to find compelling evidence to the contrary in many juris-dictions and it is perhaps more accurate to say these matters depend on direct regulation rather than authorities limiting taxi numbers and hoping for the best.

Mr Gow mentions wheelchair-accessible vehicles but, in doing so, refutes his essential point rather than proves it, since he talks about past and future taxis of this type being specified by the authorities, which is inconsistent with how he links restricted numbers to enhanced standards.

How many wheelchair- accessible taxis were available in restricted Perth before (some) licence holders were compelled to operate them? Very few, I suspect, if any at all.

As for the ‘independent unmet demand survey’ mentioned by Mr Gow, these are crude and superficial, with only the imprimatur of professional consultancies conferring a facade of legitimacy.

For example, the basic principle behind surveys is that the number of taxis should increase to reflect greater demand but they ignore the fact that between counts, any growth in demand will be met by private-hire vehicles, with both the long-term demand and supply profiles grossly distorted as a consequence.
