Hi all,

Sorry to only post when I seem to need help, but, I'm American . . .we're good at selfish . . .
Anyway, its my daughters 18th birthday and I suck at organizing festive occasions. I'm going to give her the biggest gift of cash I can afford (she worries I won't be able to keep paying for her college, so I think its the most effective gift I can give) but I do want her to feel this is a special occasion . . .that I'm not just throwing money at her, because .. .I don't know . . .like since she's not a child I'm not required to be her Dad anymore, or that I don't consider her needing my attentions anymore ...

I notice the Brits have always had pretty remarkable skills when it comes to ceremonies and events. . .actually it seems like its innate, almost easy for you guys . . .

So I be interested in ANY ideas you have, to make this . . .a sobering, but proud event . . .something that says "Hold up for a minute folks . . .we're passing a milestone, if you look at the window to your left . . ."

I know, not exactly the right forum, but probably the right people, so if you think of anything. .

Thanx, The Yank :)

A good disco with a good DJ will go down a storm. Make it a theme night / fancy dress something like the 80's.

Or perhaps ask her what she would like to do. Copout maybe, but at least you're assured that she'll have a good time :-)

Introduce her to a good looking brit. Best gift anyone could give. :D

Or pay for her to do a trip around Europe, she will come back a better person.

I've had to arrange 2 18th birthday parties. The first was a meal with about 30 guests in a favourite chinese restaurant of the birthday girl, which was then followed by a night on the town and the second, was a fancy dress party with a disco.

I think a trip around Europe would be fab, but, a little extravagant for an 18th perhaps when she's 21, a little older and wiser and more able to appreciate the culture.

I'm sure whatever you do she'll appreciate :D

With spring break just around the corner why not let her go and let her hair down, but you could get her a cab licence as well so she could help fund her way through colage

I have to disagree with "Yank" The Americans are tops when it comes to entertainment/things to do/celebrate and certainly do it better than us.

Whatever the answer is you will have it in your own country as you have so much to offer. As others have indicated it will depend how deep your trouser pockets are, but if it is Europe then you cannot even suggest the idea as it may end up letting her go on her own, purely from the aspect of her being a women.

It may come across as sexist but I would not like my daughter to go on her own...............yeah many do, but to me it is not safe.

You are savvy at finding your way around the internet...........the answer is out there.

That's ok, I will travel up to Scotland with my limo. I have been to Glasgow and Ayr on limo trips before.

Treat the Birthday girl to a trip to a British Restaurant where she can enjoy typical British fare such as the true cullinary delight......Steak Pie, Chips (fries) and Mixed Veg.

After that the young lady will appreciate your parental skills even more.
