Just had a chat with my insurers. I have cover to carry goods up to the value of £500 under my normal policy.

So, if I collect, say, two tyres from one branch of a well known 'quick installing' tyre company and deliver them to another branch, I am covered against their destruction because they are worth less than £500. But, if I collect a, say, machine tool from an engineering company for delivery elsewhere, I am not covered if it's value is in excess of £500. It was suggested to me that it should be covered by a customer's own insurance for transit.

Additionally, I could get goods in transit cover for courier work but the cost would not be economical because I don't do enough of that type of work.

Any views, comments or experiences?

Not sure if that is right, or can be right.

Say you pick up eight people from the airport, who have been shopping in New York. Their 'goods' will be in the thousands.

I last bought GIT insurance in 1998. I bought it because I had a good contract to deliver emergency machine parts from Manchester Airport nationwide. The company I sub contracted to insisted on my having GIT. The cost at that time was only £220 per year, good value really.

that would mean you were not a "common carrier" as with a courier, which is when specific GIT is required

BTW, no-one i know can find anyone who has ever made a claim (or worse, been paid) against a GIT policy, the terms/fine print are a tad fine....

I'm not after special cover necessarily. I'm trying to make sure that the insurance cover I have will cover me for the jobs I do.

Other examples of occasional or one-off jobs would be taking a forgotten passport to an airport or blood samples from a nursing home to the pathology dept. of the local hospital.

No value in those, but, eventually, someone is going to give me something more valuable to transport, unaccompanied, which could potentially be damaged or destroyed in an accident.

What, in the view of the team, should be the limit on such jobs, if any?
