Carlisle Utd fans urged to sue Virgin Trains for missing Everton cup tie
http://www.newsandstar.co.uk/news/

Carlisle United supporters who missed the FA Cup tie at Everton because of rail delays are being urged to sue Virgin Trains.

John Reardon, the Green Party’s Parliamentary candidate for Carlisle, says fans should demand a refund of their fare and match ticket.

He said: “Hundreds of Carlisle United fans have lost money because Virgin Trains let them down.

“I would encourage people to take Virgin to the small-claims court as they completely failed to fulfil their obligations to customers.”

Up to 300 fans arrived late for the January 2 Third Round tie, or missed it altogether, following power-cable failures between Lancaster and Preston.

Some paid for taxis from Preston in a desperate attempt to make the 3pm kick-off.

Mr Reardon says the incident shows the creaking state of Britain’s rail network.

The Greens’ draft election manifesto pledges to end road building and shift money to public transport instead.

They would also re-nationalise the railways and create a nationalised express inter-city bus service.

Mr Reardon added: “The current rail network is a shambles.

“Labour has had 12 years to sort this out. Instead we have the appalling situation of people being stranded.”

A spokesman for Virgin Trains said that fans who missed the match could apply for a refund as long as they had kept their train tickets.

The company’s policy was to offer vouchers up to the full value of the train fare. But it would not compensate fans for other losses, such as match tickets or taxis.

Claim forms are available at Carlisle Railway Station.

Among the fans to miss the game at Goodison Park were John Fuller, 23, of Workington, and his dad Mark, 52, of Barnard Castle.

“We were devastated not to see it,” said John.

“Supporting Carlisle you don’t often get to watch big Premier League clubs so when the opportunity arises it is really exciting.

“To have a ticket and then not be there to see them play is so disappointing.

“I listened to the last 15 minutes on the radio in the car park at Penrith station.

“There are worse things that can happen in life but it’s so frustrating when you’re sat on a train and there’s nothing you can do about it.”

I think there were actually quite a few more daft beggars that actually got to the ground in time to see their team lose. They are ones I feel sorry for.
