Carlisle taxi driver may lose licence after being caught speeding

A Carlisle cab driver with a string of speeding and other motoring offences could lose his taxi licence next week.

Raymond Earl, of Webster Crescent, Currock, has been in trouble with the city council’s regulatory panel before.

He has twice had his licence suspended and last February it was revoked altogether.

Councillors argued that Mr Earl, 53, was not “fit and proper” to drive a taxi.

He appealed to Carlisle magistrates who instead suspended his licence for eight weeks and ordered him to retake the taxi drivers’ test.

His licence was returned in July after he passed the test at the second attempt.

Mr Earl’s latest appearance before the regulatory panel follows a speeding offence on December 16 when his taxi was caught travelling at 43mph in a 30mph zone.

He had a child on board on a contract for Cumbria Country Council social services.

The panel has a range of options, from taking no action to revoking his licence.

A report lists six speeding offences by Mr Earl since 1995.

Mr Earl was also fined £50 in 2003 for not wearing a seatbelt and received a fixed penalty fine in 2008 for using a mobile phone while driving.

Six offences since 1995 is not that bad for gods sake. These Councillors need to get a grip and realise it's a perk of the job getting points for speeding.

A perk of the job ffs he had a child on board. What would you say if he caused an accident and that child was injured or killed

A perquisite, "perk" an incidental benefit gained from a job. (collins)

You may consider penalty points an "occupational hazard" but if you can't make a living within the proscribed speed limits you are in the wrong job.

Goodness knows how many times I have, but I would make dam sure I never did if I was anywhere near losing my license.

I have indeed but never ever when I have children on board and only ever if the passenger is rushed to connect a train etc. When I'm not working is a different matter

Carlisle taxi driver loses licence for speeding with child in cab

A CARLISLE cab driver with a string of speeding and other motoring offences has been stripped of his taxi licence.

Raymond Earl, of Webster Crescent, Currock, was judged not to be “fit and proper” to drive a cab when he appeared before a city council regulatory panel yesterday.

Councillor David Morton, who chairs the panel, said: “We feel strongly that we have a duty to protect members of the public who use taxis.”

Mr Earl, 53, was summoned to appear following a speeding offence on December 16 when his taxi was caught travelling at 43mph in a 30mph zone.

He had a child on board on a contract for Cumbria Country Council social services.

It was his sixth speeding offence since 1995. He now has nine points on his driving licence, three short of automatic disqualification.

Mr Earl told councillors he regretted his actions but said nothing else in his defence. He has twice had his taxi licence suspended.

It was revoked altogether last February but he appealed to Carlisle magistrates who instead suspended his licence for eight weeks and told him to re-take the taxi drivers’ test.

His licence was returned in July after he passed the test at the second attempt.

He now has the option of appealing to the magistrates’ court again.

In addition to the speeding offences, Mr Earl was fined £50 in 2003 for not wearing a seatbelt and received a fixed-penalty fine in 2008 for using a mobile phone while driving.

His taxi licence was suspended for four weeks in 2000 following speeding offences. And again for two weeks in 2002 after his taxi was spotted waiting unlawfully outside Mood nightclub and carrying out a dangerous three-point turn by traffic lights in Botchergate.

Oh well I'm sure he'll have plenty of time to reflect on the error of his ways now. At least he wasn't doing 110mph on the motorway

One odd thing is that he is a taxi driver who was convicted of not wearing a seat belt, unless he was in another area at the time of the offence with no passengers he should not have been punished for it. Pity that no more details were provided of that.

since 1995 I've clocked up a grand total of 0 points why because I don't take risks with passengers safety that is the mark of a professional driver the occassional points on license is an occupational hazard but if someone consistently picks up points it shows a lack of professionalism and to be honest drivers like that shouldn't be given the opportunity to take risks with passengers

It was more than likely in a non licensed vehicle.
