It would appear Sussex is right again. Private Hire are exempt from the equality bill. Read for yourself in case I have got it wrong.

Lords WAV debate in full

A very interesting debate, and it's now crystal clear to me that the taxi WAV amendment is going to be law very soon.

Which will lead to a sudden increase to the number of restricting councils having a 100% WAV taxi fleet.

Or a massive increase in the number of taxis licensed by restricting councils.

And, as expected the PH amendment was withdrawn. :D

All PH would have to be WAVs.

When will all of this come into force ? When it comes to renewing a new car and change of plate could the L/A insist it on being a WAV ?

Reprt stage now 3rd March. 3 sitting days later it goes for 3rd reading and "ping pong" where it is passed between Lords and commons until both agree. Royal accent can be the same day and it can become law at Midnight of that day. The speed this has been done up to now I would expect this to become law in late March. The Wigan link somebody posted on here indicates the Goverment has given advice for all council's with saloons give notice to their drivers to change vehicles from 1 April. (read para 2 of Wigan press release.)

If the bill becomes law, and IMO it's 100% certain to happen, I suspect there will be a 2-year gap before the act is enacted. Mainly due to the time it will take to work out which councils must have which % of taxi WAVs.

Once enacted I suspect it will be a case of existing saloons will be licensed until their existing license runs out, or they get written off. And then they will have to be replaced by a WAV.

But the above only applies to areas that restrict, and where the council wishes to keep the restriction.

In areas which don't have restrictions f*** knows how they are going to get a certain % of saloon to change to WAVs. :?

Maybe they will have to restrict?

I see, that would have been nasty.

So all PH don't have to be WAV anymore right?

Sorry, just a little confused :D

Clearly another question those that represent us need to ask the DfT, is, if it 'would be incredibly burdensome to the private hire industry' to make them go 100% WAV, then surely a case can/should/must be made that this has to also apply to the rural areas of the country where most taxis are in fact PH with a license to ply? :?

Or have I missed something? :?

Yes......rural areas will still be able to make a case for exemption......according to the DFT at the NTA conference.

But equality does not equal reality and probability...why should the vast majority have to jump through hoops to appease a minority that in most instances they will probably never encounter and this in itself is an inequality towards the majority as compared to the minority.

Just a thought :-k

In my borough ther is one eurocab and a couple of "other" WAVs. I don't ever remember there being a problem. Most of the drivers that work the streets have the phone numbers for these cars and simply phone one of them if a customer should require it. Although the situation has not occured to my knowlege. When this was last discussed at the council/operator meeting, the council were happy with the number of WAVs available. I hope this stays the same.

Because some areas currently discriminate against the wheelchair bound.........skip's area for example is awful. His firm can offer 20 percent discount unless of course your wheelchair bound

I'm sorry but saying "there's a bloke down the road who does wheelchair taxis" isn't good enough.........your council are responsible obviously they could have brought in policy years ago.......they didn't

Of course the next question is how to get all saloons to disappear
