Taxi attack not racially motivated
A man has been left seriously injured after an alleged dispute with a taxi driver in Oldham.
The 23-year-old victim was left with injuries to his face and body after getting caught as he got out of a taxi following an argument over the fare. He was dragged along the floor by the car as it drove off.
A number of far-right websites have reported the incident as racially motivated with a Facebook group set up calling for the taxi firm concerned to be boycotted.
But police have denied any racial motivation.
DI Javid Pervaiz said: "We are treating this as a dispute between a taxi driver and a passenger and there is no evidence of any racial aggravation. Any sort of speculation about racism is both misleading and unhelpful.
"What is important is to stick to the facts. We have made an arrest but we are continuing with our inquiries to establish exactly what happened.
"The public can help us with our investigation by reporting any information they have. We are keen that anyone who witnessed what happened come forward and speak to us."
A 29-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of section 18 wounding and bailed pending further inquiries.
