Toots you are asking for the impossible......

It only took you 68 posts to find that out

Looks that way CC....

I have been known to be a little demanding at times, but, I don't think it is impossible. A mixed fleet would ressolve a lot of these issues. That may turn out to be a little unfair in some cases but certainly not impossible. I think you give up all to easily Towag

Here it's once a year but extensive...... Oldest one here is "M" reg Metrocab!! :P

M is 15 year old, but I suppose if it passes the test.

I think ours is my mates N reg fairway, absolutely mint condition.......but the sad thing is, once it goes off, he wont be spending money on a vehicle under 3.

CC

Sad as that is nothing lasts for ever, my old plastic pig did well for 15, but as you say Fairways and the like do rust out eventually and getting parts gets harder, too juicy as well.....
Replaced mine with a Citroen Voyager Hackney spec 5 years ago, its ok, economical, good service intervals, but I miss the turning circle, but don't miss the stripped out tyres, drum brakes all round, leaky auto box and greasing king pins!!!! :x

Only doing about 15000 a year now so it should last me till I'm gone..... hopefully :-|

Toots, when you have been at it 23 years, maybe you will be saying things differently, maybe I am stuck in my ways and don't agree with what you are saying, but if you think about it we already have in place what everybody wants..... Ya can't please everybody all of the time...period!!
What I would like to see and sorry if I'm repeating myself is:
That all Hackney fleets be Wav's, saloons be made to come to the same standard on next purchase, All license issue suspended until any unmet demand is proved, surveys financed by LA's.
PH to stay as they are as it would make no difference.... This gives punters the choice to either phone up or wait patiently for what they want... My bet is that most will take what's on offer when it's p******g down with rain and freezing blood cold, the driver gets off their fat asses (well mine is ok) and helps them out Savvy?
I know that this is unlikely to happen, but then I don't really give a toss as I only have a short sentence to do. Personally I don't feel professional anymore and that has been brought on by the mindless deregulation/delimitation that we have.... further more when I started off in this trade I did so with a company with a mixed Hackney and PH fleet for two years, learnt the ropes that way before I took the plunge and went out on my own.....

Who says I haven't been at it that long, it certainly feels like it some days  I doubt I'll change my opinion to be honest, I've held this one for quite some time now

I'll take your word it. It would be nice if all the drivers got out and helped people but the sad fact is they don't

Going by your avatar, if that is you, I doubt it.....
Well it's good, we can agree to disagree..... and as you say it's bad news when drivers only get out when they get home..... As for some I don't think they can get out!! Talk about half tonners!!
Maybe that is the trouble with the trade .... it attracts all the lazy good for nothing, but sitting on their asses!!

It will not make the slightest bit of difference here in Winchester, (80 wav's, 49 saloons), no limit except quality control.... where per 1000 population we should only have 65 Hackneys!!!

If the gov says that your manor needed 75% WAV taxis, I suppose they could restrict and make all taxis WAV.

Dundee has no age restrictions but the older the car is the more tests it has to have in the year.

That policy does have its merits.

What's the situation for Sussex, Captain Cab, and you other guys?

We are 100% WAV for taxis with a population of around 311,000. The taxis tend to work only 2 areas of the Wirral (which will expain the unmet demand). Not sure of the exact number of taxi plates out but I have seen them numbered upto 400 but I don't think they are all being used (if that makes sense). We have upwards of 2000 private hire and all private hire systems have taxis working on them
But your council is now playing silly games.... if you don't get your cabs tested on time.... even a day late..... and you're vehicle is over three years of age..... they will insist that you most comeback with a vehicle under three years of age, and then they will give you a licence...

I'd be inclined to agree somewhat with what you said if I didn't have a regular passenger that has to get into a WAV on his hands and knees and that's why he is prepared to wait for a PH to come and get him. WAV's like saloons are not perfect for every customer

Why can't that fella get a WAV with a ramp he can walk up? :?

I know they do that but when I checked online at the regulations I couldn't find where it said the vehicle had to to be under 3 years of age in the first place :?

Dear (Towag)

Thank you for your email of 9 February 2010, I apologise for the delay in replying.

I believe that you have already spoken to John Myall, the Licensing and Registration Manager, who explained that Winchester City Council is not empowered to put a limit on the number of licences issued. The only limit WCC is permitted to impose is in respect of new applications for saloon cars as hackney carriages as they must now be wheelchair compatible. Further, there is considerable pressure from the Department of Transport on authorities to remove limits.

This authority has modified the policies and procedures as far as is possible in order to ensure that we get the highest calibre of applicants. These include more stringent medical requirements, CRB and DVLA checks, knowledge tests and driving tests. It is considered that these and market forces will eventually go some way to limit the number of licensed taxis.

I am satisfied that the Council is doing all it can within the limits of its powers to control the number of taxis.

Yours sincerely

Cllr George Beckett
Leader of the Council

I Wonder if he's made a slip there?

We had a driver who insisted his mondeo was wheelchair accessible as in, "You just fold it and put in the boot".

Hard to argue with his logic......................................................................if you're him

You kinda got it right he does have a little drink. He's not steady on his feet, likes to be independant while he still can so doesn't like being helped up the ramp. He would prefer to sit in the vehicle bum first, simple as that
