If drivers are genuinely concerned about the cost of the NVQ on the tax payer and it is not required by their council then don't do it. Just do the Btec and put your money (as little as it is) where your mouth is.

Even as an NVQ assessor I still think drivers should be trained and not NVQ'd. If they put practical in with the Btec it may be a worthwhile course. Oh yes and change that pi$$ easy test at the end of it

You said it!!

You would have to be truly really thick not to pass the Btec......
therefore two days wasted with nothing to show for it except a piece of paper worth nothing.....

As for the waste of tax payers money? Honestly Toots it goes without saying.....

Then again you have a vested interest I believe.....

Not particularly I haven't done any assessing for a while. I'm struggling to justify the existence of the NVQ for taxi/ph drivers. That is not to say I don't think drivers shouldn't be trained because I whole heartedly do

Should it be done before they get a license or after? It seems to me that quality control would be the best way forward with reference to previous jobs and conduct within those posts just as a potential employer would expect one to have.... albeit they will be self employed..... no references at all would indicate some negativity as to whether fit and proper an applicant would be....

It's only a suggestion so don't bite my head off ok. I believe the bulk of training should be pre licence for new drivers with short follow up courses for the next 2 years to up skills and knowledge of the trade and try to get them actively involved within the trade. The courses offered for the 2nd and 3rd year would be made available for current drivers if they wished to take them. With further regard to current drivers I think all drivers should have relevant disability awareness and hands on practice of transporting passengers that need assistance and those in wheelchairs. I also think that all drivers should take a DSA test. That of course is only my opinion :-|

Sounds reasonable...... Bearing in mind current legislation, economic downturn and the amount of people trying to get into the trade, where over saturation is rife at present..... It's another angle that could be/is being adopted.... Quality limitation as opposed to quantity limitation.... might work.... Has slowed it down here in Winchester to some extent as licensing were experiencing lots of complaints (although kept it quiet), but implemented the extra hoops too late.... eusasmiles.zip
