Hire cars go head-to-head over taxi ads

MINICAB firms could soon win the right to advertise on their vehicles for the first time – a move likely to put them on a collision course with the black cab trade.

One private hire company has asked the city council's permission to display its name and phone number on 116 of its vehicles.

Should the move win the backing of licensing chiefs, it would bring Edinburgh into line with other Scottish cities.

However, it is likely to upset the Capital's taxi trade, which is understood to be growing increasingly concerned about the role of private hire firms, which rely on phone bookings and cannot be hailed on the street.

Minicab firm Edinburgh City Private Hire has asked licensing bosses for permission to display its logo and telephone number.

The council's regulatory committee is set to discuss the plans at a meeting today. However, moves to allow private hire cars to display rooftop signs have been ruled out due to concerns that they may confuse the public that the vehicles are for hire on the street.

Councillor Colin Keir, who chairs the council's regulatory committee, said there remained concerns about "seagulling", where private hire cars illegally tout for business on the street.

Brakes put on minicab drive to advertise on vehicles

MINICAB firms have been denied the right to advertise on their vehicles following a ruling by licensing chiefs.

One of the Capital's private hire firms had wanted to display its name and phone number on 116 of its vehicles.

The city council's regulatory committee ruled against the move amid concerns about "seagulling", where private hire cars illegally tout for business on the street.

Edinburgh City Private Hire had asked licensing bosses for permission to display its logo and telephone number on some of its vehicles, bringing Edinburgh into line with other Scottish cities.

A report to councillors said the city's cab inspector had no objections to the plan, provided a standard design was adopted by all vehicles. It also said that 70 per cent of local authorities across the country allowed such advertising.

But there were fears among councillors that the move would cause confusion by giving the impression that private hire cabs could be hailed in the street.

Last year, licensing bosses ruled that all private hire cars in the Capital had to carry "pre-booked hires only" signs.

It is so annoying that two councils see this different, Dundee granted permission for numbers to be on the doors. :? They must also Display a sign on the front door that says ADVANCED BOOKINGS ONLY

I think I am correct that Glasgow PH have the phone number on the rear screen.
Why not colour code them instead paint all PH yellow or pink for Toots
Then all hacks could be any colour they wanted

If Edinburgh City Private Hire, (ECPH) liveried up, a number of Hacks to endorse their business, the public would flood to their business without giving it a second thought – instant credibility.

I think that running hacks among their fleet is much more effective than a livery on private car.

I am frightened of meeting you on a dark taxi rank,

What with your record of phisically attacking your fellow taxi drivers.

Hold that temper gary.
