I know the info is on here somewhere but can somebody tell me if HC's can form a rank on private land or is the only place they can rank on an offical rank.

Depends on their by-laws/conditions.

Well we do at the Donington Download concert every year. There is a designated Taxi rank in a field where any Hackney from neighbouring districts can go.
Although saying that there has been talk of permits this year as it's the usual story of too many turning up.It can take 2 hours to get a job (minimum £10).

Regards
Steve

I don't think there is any law against it.

I think there will be somewhere, or if there isnt there should be.

Well unless you can point me in the right direction, I can't see it's illegal.

As to, 'there should be', there will be . . . when the 1847 & 1976 Acts are scrapped & replaced with up to date legislation.

And there's as much chance of that as there is of knitting fog.

What happens if the council concerned has a 'go back to nearest rank' condition on the HC vehicle license? :?

Also the definition of 'a street' isn't as simple as one thinks. Legally it can, and does, mean many places that the likes of you and me wouldn't call 'a street'.

I can well remember a person getting banned for driving his vehicle (over the legal alcohol limit) 10 yards off a ferry miles away from 'a street'.

That's not legal unless those from outside the licensing district have a prior booking, IMHO.

Railway Station in Plymouth, private road with a permit only Rank.

Hospital in Plymouth, land belongs to the NHS Trust, Hackney rank on it.

Legallity or otherwise, I don't know.

If the council has formally adopted those ranks, with the permission of the land-owner, then it's totally legal.

When The Royal Show at Stoneleigh near Kenilworth was still going (the last one was in 2009) a permit system applied there for years, with the rank inside the showground.

Cabs from Leamington, Kenilworth, Coventry, Birmingham, Solihull, Nuneaton & Bedworth etc., etc., were all allowed to get permits.
