Why do some councils put an expiry date in plates then issue a new one
Once we have ours we keep them for as long as needed

Some places have more than two cabs

CC

All 128 have there own large plate number 1 to 128 so if we had an expiry date the council would have to issue 128 new plates every year

Well that's what our council do every year for considerably more than 128 vehicles

Same here. In Nottingham when a vehicle goes in for the annual test the plate is removed from the vehicle before the test even if it has not expired. If the car passes, a new plate is issued. If it fails then it can't work until it has passed.

our council use the mogo plate system which means you have a new plate and a new inner plate (basically a window sticker with a smaller version of the plate inserted) it was brought in because the council had a problem getting plates returned once they hadn't been renewed and some cars ran on temporary plates for months because the drivers couldn't be bothered to get the proper plate once it was issued now there are NO temporary plates and you cannot use a vehicle till the plate is issued so problem solved except that it can take several days for the issueing of a plate

Not sure that's legal.

A license is issued for a year, not until the tester says otherwise.

If the vehicle does not pass the test it is deemed to be unfit to use.
Are you sugesting that say a vehicle comes in for the test and say a track rod end is worn or a ball joint worn, the vehicle should be allowed to carry on working? I think that would leave the tester open to a law suit if a passenger were subsequently killed.

Maybe deemed by a tester, but not IMO the law of the land.

Yes if the tyres are bald or iffy brakes are apparent, but if it's a bit of dirt, or the odd fag burn then I think revoking the license, which is what the tester is doing, is illegal.

I don't think that vehicles in Nottingham are being failed for a bit of dirt and how does a vehicle get a fag burn these days.

If the failure is mechanical then clearly it isn't a 'fit and proper' vehicle.

If the failure is not mechanical then it shouldn't be de-licensed by the tester.

By some pi** head lighting a fag and burning the seat.

You do lead a sheltered existence.

I think the Nottingham testing station is very good. They will not fail a vehicle unless they have to. Small repairs are rectified before the vehicle is taken away so no failure is given but no other repair work takes place on site so no plate is issued.
I have to use this test station for my limousines. If a fault is found the tester will show you what and where the fault is and in some cases they have actually helped me rectify small problems. I think they are very good.

If a vehicle here goes for testing prior to the end of the licence and it fails, the testing station notify the LO and they will telephone the office and have that vehicle data head blocked. Obviously this only applies to PH or HC's that work for PH systems. In any case if a vehicle fails it's test the LO is notified. Never do the testing station remove the plate from the vehicle

Here there is no direct communication between testing stations and LO they rely on receiving the paperwork from the driver to notify them a vehicle has passed so they wouldn't know a vehicle has failed but the testing station will refuse to let you drive a vehicle away if a dangerous fault is found unless it is to transfer the vehicle directly to the garage carrying out the repairs
