It arrived today, nice compact easy to use machine.

I'll try it out tomorrow, I'm leaving the door signs off for the time being . . a gentle start to try it out.

I have done two transactions on it today, one to Liverpool and one down to Gatwick . . . . well not quite, but there’s always hope! :D

It’s simple easy to use Nidge, although having a TX2 it’s a nuisance as the customer has to complete the transaction through the nearside window.
The TX4 has a bigger hole for these types of machine.

It also relies on a Vodaphone signal, which isn't a problem in most parts of London, but may be elsewhere.

The 10% is added onto the fare when you enter it, mind you it meant no additional tip, they may not have tipped anyway as it was on a company Visa card . . . but it makes you wonder?

That appears to operate in exactly the same way as mine, but via my own phone. I pay nothing apart from the cost of the phone data link.

Sorry GBC, I don't mean to pi$$ on your fire but so far, I can see no advantage to paying for the privilege.......??

You're not peeing on my fire Mr C, it’s more the convenience of a self sufficient chip and pin machine without fannying about with phone texts and bits of paper, it seems to be a convenient way for me for £3 a week.

Your phone service saves you the £3, I just prefer the independent machine.

The PCO also insist you display an official sign which tells the punter that they will have to pay a 10% charge for using the service, and that has to be displayed.

I also get 1% ( ) back as commission on each transaction, so it may end up covering its own £3 a week if it’s popular enough.

When I had the Silverpay machine you could choose the surcharge you wanted and change it to suit your needs.
The rental was a bit dearer though £30 a month

Well thats over a week gone by, I've done about 10 transactions since it arrived, nothing special, but it has saved me looking for two cash machines.

Simple enough to use, I've even applied the exterior signage.

Brave or what?

Had one of these for about 6 weeks myself, I looked on it that for a bit more than a pint a week it was another choice for the punter in these difficult times.

Well, that's nearly 6 months since I started using the Cab Card payment system.

Impressions so far?

Good.
No outstanding fares from here to Wales or the likes, but it has cut out all the hassle of looking for cash machines, and it's got me off to the Airport on 3 occasions from Hotel Ranks with people wishing to use business cards.

I'm pleased with the back up side, they're quite helpful for techno phoebes’ such as myself, and all the money has been paid in when they said it would.

The only down side is sometimes in London customers want to jump out at the stupidest places, and taking a card means you have to wait on the transaction going through which can often cause a few hold ups.

That said, I'd recommend it.

Im used to have a chip and pin machine but i had my own merchant account and the carges to got too much.

i could have included the charges as a surcharge I guess for people who wanted to pay by card but after a couple of fraudulent charge back attempts ( I got the meny back but still lost the charge back adminstration fee) I gave up and closed the merchant account and sent the machine back :)

now I just use google checkout, but I only take advance bookings now and people pay in advance so I'm quite happy and I've been able to mash up google checkout with google maps so people can get their own quotes and make the booking. - if I can only get them to drive themselves as well :)

I was paying £25.00 a month rental for the machine with airport time and about 3% commission on transactions with Bank of Scotland and a little bit more for American Express.

The biggest problems I had was signal coverage, vodaphone does have some deadspots around the country especially Wales and I often forgot to charge the ammed machine so it would run out of power half way through a transaction.

and you always had to keep plenty of recipt rolls in the cab because if you ran out of paper halfway through a transaction the machine would not continue with the operation until the roll was replaced.

As it looks like JourneyPay have indeed hit the rocks(the phone line is dead) I need a new provider.I was all set to try Cab Card but then a mate told me they had been on to him regarding lack of use. They informed him the they made no profit on the rental alone and threatened to take it back off him and charge him accordingly...it's in the small print apparently about not using it over a 21 day period. He has only just started up so has seldom used the facility.I am just starting my 3rd year of the website and still don't find many require to pay by card.I would like to use Cab Card as having the terminal seems more professional.
Has anyone else encountered this problem?
Regards
Steve

I don't use it that much.

They've never said now't to me, if they did there would be a rather long letter published in TAXI explaining to the other 25'000 London drivers that CabCard treat their subscribers like ****.

But as I said, I've not heard any stories about drivers not using their machines enough.

Ordered Cab Card online Sunday, they rang me to confirm delivery Monday and it arrived at 07.20 Tuesday.Pretty impressive.
Put £400 through it Friday from running some visitors around this week so that should keep them happy for a bit.And the 1% commission pays for my first weeks rental so job's a good un. :D
