Sad because I don't like driving them, but very happy that soon all my colleagues will be sharing the same experience. \:D/

If I didn't know better I'd think you're opinion of 100% WAV's was biased  Having said that maybe I don't know better

I'm not saying they are the perfect cab, cos they ain't, but the E7, TW type cabs can IMO take anyone, as long as they have got a pull out ramp.

If a punter can walk up a small ramp, then they can get in. All it needs is for drivers to show them how easy it is, and for saloon drivers to stop scaremongering the grannies.

Now that's a novel idea!!

And I have to admit I hadn't thought of that before.

But keep it quite, because under-floor pull out ramps are an extra grand with Cab Direct & not that popular with many drivers.

If LOs get that into their heads, it will become the new CoF in many, even most areas.

As far as I know, Ms Toots is PH at the moment, but tomorrow she could be HC, because she has both Driver Licences.

Clever lady is Ms Toots.

Is that right Ms Toots?

Just because you are daft enough to try to push a 20 stone bloke in a wheelchair up a 40% incline on cold wet day, does'nt mean everyone else is!
When you are on here in 20 yrs[god willing]cribbing about how your back is all done because of all the wheelchairs you tried to get into your van, guess who's gonna say TOLD YOU SO!
Even your own LA have two ppl to do your job and a chair lift. The ambulace station ppl use the same methodology so why do you think that you know better? eusasmiles.zip #
Even worse, because you feel you need to do it, you want everyone else to have to do it as well, so you dont feel left out.
In 30 years time ppl will be amazed that taxi drivers were ever asked to undertake such dangerous tasks on their own, with add-hock vans and no power lifts. I suspect that you have never worked in any other industy [sorry if iam incorrect] but if you did, you would be horrified at some of the tasks that LA require taxi drivers to do. When the same LA in-house transport staff must conform to Health & Safety criteria, you would prefer to ignore H & S and knuckle under rather than tackle your own LA. Its realy just looking at the industry from a commom sense point of view and not a taxi drivers point of view!

Taxi drivers can and should work to H&S regulations same as any other worker and would be with in their rights to refuse a wheelchair passenger if after following out a risk assesment found there to be a risk either to themselves or a passenger.

As for the 20 stone passenger, this comes under Manual Handling and if you feel the passenger is too heavy to move you are well with in your rights to refuse them.

Is what right? That I am clever or I have 2 licences  I do indeed have both licences. I don't drive a HC because of the vehicle requirements. I don't see the point in my having a WAV as I don't think I have the strength to push many people (if any) in a wheelchair up a ramp. Apart from that I ferry my mother around quite a bit and she doesn't like the WAV because she has to be helped into them and she prefers a 'bottom in first' approach to vehicles because she likes to feel independent. As to whether I am clever that would depend on subject

You didn’t! I was just sensationalizing: lol:  There was the larger WAV audience to consider! :D :D
The only wheelchair user I would consider would be a young child due to the lighter weight. Thats after I have done my risk arssessment.
I have already done my risk assessment and I have no WAV. :D :D

Indeed there is a larger WAV audience, and when the Act finally comes into being, it will get even larger.

However the point you made about the ten tonne Tessie, isn't IMO a valid one.

If a WAV punter is too big to wheel up into the motor, then you can refuse on the grounds of your health, and you would be fully justified in doing so.

I agree, but I'am of the opinion that drivers shouldn't be forced to obtain a WAV just to retain their jobs. I would also suggest that drivers should be able to buy a WAV if they want to operate one. In Denbighshire it seems to work out very well. You can put on a saloon or a WAV, the benefit for the WAV operator is the extra passenger capacity they can accomadate. The biggest gripe though is that they can only charge the same metered rate as the saloons, but that does not deter ppl. The WAV/saloon ratio is about 1/5 more than enough to accomadate wheelchair users. Thats deregulation for you!
I have said this earlier, I have seen wheelchair users avoid the WAVS and use a saloon car instead. The pushchair brigade tend to go for the WAVS for obvious reasons.
