You would usually refer economies of scale to production type companies and although services provided could be included in this theory I find it hard to see how it applies in this particular instance. If you have more licenses to produce you would need more staff to produce them. Perhaps SMBC are just more efficient or pay lower wages than surrounding areas. It could just be that they actually follow the law in relation to licenses and don't charge more than it costs. Personally I think it's just good business practice to know exactly who's ass to kiss

I was messing on the net and found this site and when i realized the majority on here have similar problems as us here then it made me feel a bit better. I make a living but my hours have gone from about 55 to 80 odd a week for the same dough. My resentment comes from all my family being all together at the same time for about 8 hours a week. As for finding another job then this job suits me at the moment with the wife being the main breadwinner  then we don't have problems with childcare for the three kids. When they're old enough though then i'll certainly be on the lookout for something before the kids lives pass us bye.

Well if it can apply to services, then why not the processing of licences?

Indeed, Delta themselves should know plenty about economies of scale, which makes it doubly surprising that they didn't apprciate the point, but perhaps the alternative theory is the dominant one here.

Don't know, but it's certainly the case that the analysis presented doesn't take into account what the licensing process entails - which can vary considerably between areas - so to that extent the whole thing is a bit crude.

I said it could be applied to services, imo tho it would be difficult. In some cases such as food service like the 'all you can eat buffets' it's easier to apply this theory because the owner would sell more produce but still have minimal staff. When offering a service that is basically down to time management it is difficult to apply because it will always take that length of time to issue the license. Hence the more licenses required, the more time it will take and the more staff you will need. It will cause a constant uping and downing of costs which if my memory serves me right is deeconomies of scale, but, I could be wrong.

With regard to Delta I don't see why they would be interested in economies of scale because the general running costs of their company such as electric, water, wages etc can only ever go up if they expand. The more drivers they have the more staff they need to take phonecalls, do accounting, take settles etc and staffing in a business is generally the biggest expense. It's not a simple case of the more you produce the cheaper it becomes like it does in purchasing or manufacturing. It's just a case of having more money coming in

I do not wish to be rude to any one .. or supercilious in my attitude..... but I find it hard at times reading the advice people give on here... specially when referring to the future of Hackney and private hire trade .
1... all licensing regarding hackney and private hire is carried out through Sefton one-stop shops.. you can pay all your bills there. rates. council rent and so on.. combining many services in one place , the hackney department pay at a set price per licence... which means it is efficient and cost effective..... no dead bodies being paid for doing nothing.

2... Delta is extremely well run company... I believe drivers even pay the rent by standing order. and many other ways... they work in the 21st century were most of the cab and private hire trade are still working in the 20th ...
