Essex County Council admits gaffe over cabbies’ bus lane fines

A council has apologised after taxi drivers in Basildon were wrongly fined for using a bus lane.
Several cabbies were issued with £60 penalties for using the new bus lane which connects the Festival Leisure Park with Ghyllgrove.
A hi-tech camera at the site captures the registration numbers of vehicles using the lane, so fines can be issued.
However, taxi drivers are supposed to be exempt from the rules.
Cabbie Ralph Morgan, 65, of Sandon Road, Basildon, said: “It’s a silly mistake on behalf of Essex County Council. It shouldn’t be happening.
“Times are tough enough for drivers in our industry.”
Essex County Council, which built the lane, has admitted the gaffe.
A spokesman said: “We are in the process of correcting this error.
“If any taxi drivers have been issued with a fine for using the bus link we ask they call the number on the letter so the error can be corrected.
“Essex County Council would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused.”
