Councillors in Sutton in Ashfield suspend 21 taxi owners for one month, for over ranking.

The whole taxi trade stands back and does nothing to confront the injustice.

One suspended driver said on Saturday night that they were enjoying the time off and were thinking about not starting back, he's got a bit of work delivering Pizzas for £6 an hour + £1.50 per delivery.

You would have thought that Ashfield presented a golden opportunity. For the likes of the NTA, to step in and show what can be achieved as part of an organization that protects drivers' rights.

Had they done so, I bet a great many drivers might have flocked to their ranks.

The truth is, there is no guarantee the NTA, would have backed them up had they all been members. I have no doubt, there would have been lots of free advice but no commitment of Legal Representation.

Ignorance.... stupidity...... are words that describe certain people.... on here...... councils operate round rules..... and unfortunately for trade reps.... we have to have permission off the people involved before we can act for them...... we cannot just go sailing in.... the council will not deal with any one who is not authorised..... but as trade reps we know all this... that's why we do not make ourselves look stupid...... sometimes our hands are tied by the very people we are trying to help.... not insulting anyone.... just stating a fact....

You have 21 drivers suspended for a month. It is of no relevance, who, the 21 are only that they have been suspended unjustly. Anyone of us could find ourselves in the same position at any time if we happen to fall foul of our LA. This is not a problem for the 21 in isolation, but for the trade as a whole, and should be fought as such. If it is left unchallenged it makes a powerful statement. That we are the shi* on our LA's shoes.

What these guys needed was Legal Representation and the funding to make it happen. I can't believe that had this been offered almost immediately, all 21 would have decided on a holiday instead.

As I have said before it is not about the 21 suspensions in isolation but how it affects all of us in the long term.

Ashfield council is making a statement.
