Taxi driver fined after being caught smoking behind the wheel
A TAXI driver has been fined £30 after being spotted smoking in his cab while waiting for a customer.
A Carmarthenshire County Council officer issued the £30 on-the-spot fine in Carmarthen’s town centre Lammas Street earlier this week, the authority’s first for breaking the ban on smoking in public places, which came into effect in Wales in April 2007. Carmarthenshire council head of public protection Philip Davies said officers from the street scene section were investigating another problem in Lammas Street when they saw the driver smoking in his vehicle.
Executive board member for housing and public protection, Coun Hugh Evans said: “Taxis are vehicles which the public use regularly and must be kept smoke-free. The driver has learned a very hard and expensive lesson and I am sure the message will soon circulate among the rest of the trade.”
