What am I thinking about, an increase in tariff must make a huge difference to driver takings, with all that disposable income washing around?

Perhaps toots, has it right, customers will use taxis more, out of sympathy because of increased running costs.

I take it GBC, CC and Chris the fish, agrees with the above, I know that toots, does.

We seem to have GBC, CC, Chris the fish, Grandad and who else want's to add their name to the growing list of absolute er*eholes?

A fecking tariff increase, you've got to be kidding

Come on guys

I can't make out whether you are agreeing with, or criticising . . . . your own post?

Don't forget the tariff is the maximum you can charge, and that any driver/ owner, is free to charge less if they wish
We have just turned down an increase offered by the council 1.5% as it would cost us more to change the meters £35 for 30 seconds work, and would take around 6 months to recoup that charge

That's not the point Mr Skippy41!

Having 1.5% now, which the punter won't notice means that you won't have to add it on to the next rise.

The culmination of your point is that if you leave it for too long, then you end up with one whapping rise that the punter notices & then you have strong resistance.

It's always best to have a small rise every year; firstly for the reason I have stated & also because if you have a huge rise in one go, then the licensing committee might always refuse it.

Look at London; 1% to 3.5% every year without fail. No one hardly notices. But if they left it for a few years & went for 10% to 12% in one go, all hell would break loose.

And finally; just look at the annual fare rises on the trains & buses, usually in January.

Do you know what level of increase the train companies are already talking about for January 2011?

Wouldn't you all just be better off sticking to the metered fares rather than cutting each others throats?

We're already too expensive in an economy that is fecked. Why would you want to put fares up?

And if de-restriction delivers me my licence, so that I can contain costs, and defray any costs over a range of business activitites, why shouldn't I be given my licence?

It's in the public interests for de-restriction. Because restriction only delivers high rentals and high tariffs.

And a mindset in cabbies that the world owes them a living.

Time for market forces to sort out the madcap "Toots" of this world, eh?

Fuel has gone up, insurance has gone up, in some cases licencse fees have gone up, replacement parts have gone up, mechanic fees have gone up, settles or rentals may well have gone up, tax burdens are going up and in general the cost of living has gone up. I think these are a pretty good reason to put fares up.

Are you on the right f u c k i n bus?? You might be running on a decent tarrif but other parts of the country aren't.

If drivers want to keep susidising people's taxis more fool them, I'm here to earn a living not to subsidise the trip to the post office to collect the weekly Giro.

can people still do that? I thought the weekly or fortnightly giro had finished ages ago. Don't they pay all benefits into an account or onto a card now?

I've been in the trade for almost 21 years, and I have yet to see a tariff hike translate into a real increase in driver takings. It just means fewer customers paying more while the rest takes their custom elsewhere. The competition, (PH) then grows stronger as a consequence and takes even more work. In the last 20 years, I've witnessed at least a 30% drop in custom, while Ph, have grown from approximately 300 vehicles in 1999-2000 to around 1000 at today's date. I was earning more, pro rata, 21 years ago, I wonder why? :-|

Do you want to know why an increase in tariff almost never works in real terms' toots?

Perhaps you could tell us? :-|

I'll give you a little clue, everyone ends up working for less. :-|

Amended for the benefit of CC, living in the current day dream world of opulence.

21 Years ago.....that takes me back, Yazz and the Plastic population and VAT at 15%, I know how to party or what!

That aside, my flagfall then was £0.90p.

I'm glad I dont have that now, I think I'd be looking at our cats, a bottle of daddies sauce, with a strange look in my eyes. Come October its (the flagfall) is going to be £2.50p, and we have an extra 187 plates to share our good fortune with.
