police have issued a warning following the case of a woman who was indecently assaulted after getting into the car of a bogus taxi driver.

The incident happened at 0200 BST on Thursday when the woman got into a blue saloon in Renfield Street, Glasgow.

The driver, described as Asian, in his 30s and who had a moustache, drove to the east end of the city where the assault took place.

Strathclyde Police have warned the public not to use unlicensed cabs.

Det Con Graham McCreadie said: "This has been a very frightening ordeal for this woman and she is extremely upset.

"It's possible this man has approached other women, pretending to be a taxi driver, and I would urge them to get in touch with us as a matter of urgency as they may have additional information which could assist our inquiry.

"It's imperative we trace the man responsible."

The police said the car involved in the incident had no radio inside it and did not have taxi plates attached.

Mustve been pretending to be a Taxi if he approached the woman...otherwise he have been pre booked.

I suppose he really wasnt either a Bogus Taxi nor PH..he was just a perv in a vehicle....At 2.00 am I guess Taxis and PH could be made to be Illuminated in Hi Viz yellow lighting...but still Idiots would jump in an unmarked vehicle. I guess its impossible to stop certain people from doing stupid things at 2am for whatever stupid reasons they do it...

Thats Life!

Police hunt sex attack ‘cab’ driver

The woman got into the car in Renfield Street

A bogus taxi driver was today being hunted by police after a woman was indecently assaulted.

The incident happened after the woman got into a blue saloon car in Glasgow at 2am on Thursday, thinking it was a private hire cab.

She was picked up in Renfield Street, near to the Bistro Kebab Shop.

After telephoning for a private hire vehicle, she got into the car thinking it was the cab she had ordered.

The driver then took her to an area in the East End of the city where she was indecently assaulted.

The woman was left “extremely distressed” by the early morning incident.

Police issued a description of the attacker who was Asian, in his 30s and had a moustache.

They say it is possible the driver may have approached other women in the city centre.

Detectives today advised the public to always use Hackney taxis or licensed private cabs.

They also suggested passengers should consider ordering taxis or private hire vehicles in advance and look for proper identification from the driver before getting into a cab.

Checks should be made on the driver’s ID and licence which should be displayed on the vehicle.

Police also said the driver should know the passenger’s name before they get into the taxi.

Detective Constable Graham McCreadie said: “This has been a very frightening ordeal for this woman and she is extremely upset.

“It’s possible this man approached other women, pretending to be a taxi driver, and I would urge them to get in touch with us.

“It’s imperative we trace the man responsible.”

Don't they have plates and door signs on the private hire vehicles up there?

There are some on here that don't think door signs on ph are a good idea because it encourages people to bother them. Myself personally think that if it prevents an incident like this then it's worth being bothered by the odd would be punter.

Except bright girl (NOT!!!) not everyone using a taxi or private hire comes from an area where these signs exist.

So, to them, if a guy says he's a taxi, and they want to get home, and they're under the influence of drink or drugs, they get in the vehicle.

Even a greedy, self-centred, couldn't care less about anyone else, disgrace for a female like you should be able to grasp such a simple point.

Well, obviously not.

Every time something like this occurs, sure enough, up pops Toots to flaunt her vested interest.

Is it a requirement of taxi ownership that you have to be a complete reprobate?

Is that what the councils are protecting?

I'll ignore your personal insults for now and lets get to the crux of the point I was trying to make when I asked "Don't they have plates and door signs on the private hire vehicles up there?". We have our vehicles well marked so that punters know that it is a phv they are getting into and not a bogus vehicle. It makes sense to me that it should be the norm throughout the country that all phv are marked sufficiently enough so that punters can tell the difference, even when they're under the influence of drink or drugs, between a bogus phv and a legitimate phv.

What vested interest is this? I don't see any relevance to this comment tbh
