If I've read all this right the only difference between PH and HC in scotland is possibly the type of vehicle they have to drive and HC being able to pick up on the street and sit on ranks. Lets face it nobody wants to be sat on a rank anyway cos that means they ain't got a job to do. I'd be inclined to look at the financial side of this and see exactly what benefit I'd be getting if I was HC driver cos it appears things are more in favour of the PH up there. You're on the same tariff as each other, the same circuit as each other and you all have an ops licence. I don't see any benefit really to being a HC driver in Scotland :?

The Ph, is like a virus that divides and multiples to consume everything in its path. Any time there is an increase in work the Ph expands in numbers to meet the demand. This might mean a short term spike in income for the existing drivers, but it only lasts until more cars appear on the circuit to meet the demand. The financial benefit goes to the radio circuit owner in the form of radio dues.

The Hacks, as you know, are restricted in their number. Their companies, for the most part, operate for the benefit of the individual taxi owner. Although now you could argue the real benefit goes to the committees, who are supposed to be running the companies in the members' interests.

In the last 10 years, the Ph has tripled in their number, from approximately 300 in 1999-2000 to around 1000 at today's date.

In that time, the hack fleet has lost at least 30% of its work. While there are other factors that haven't helped this hasn't stopped the expansion of Ph.

Yeah? me too.....20 odd years ago.

The only thing a PH operator is interested in is more vehicles on their circuit.

Dundee taxi fares are set to rise by around 7% after the city’s licensing committee backed the cab trade's call for a new fares structure.

The new set-up, which has to undergo a potentially lengthy objection/appeal process, would see every journey of up to 1204 yards charged at a flat rate of £3

The new rates could be in force within two months.

At present, a sliding scale charges a minimum £2.40 and rises with distance.

The proposed new fares are the result of a consultation process where taxi trade members were asked whether they supported a council-devised structure, or one recommended by the Dundee Taxi Association (DTA) and the Unite union or no increase at all.

Licensing committee convener Rod Wallace said the consultation response was worse than expected with just 29% replying. But of the 193 responses, 94 favoured the DTA scheme, almost as many as for the two other options added together.

Mr Wallace said on Thursday, "While I am disappointed at the relatively poor return, that is the way it stands and we have to go with that position. My recommendation to the committee is to move the DTA proposals."

The DTA scheme will see the initial charge rise from £2.40 for the first 704 yards to £3 for the first 1204 yards. At present, each additional 250 yards costs 20p but this will be amended to 20p for each 233 yards.

That will have the effect of increasing the mileage rate after the first mile from £1.41 to £1.51.

There will be no change to the current charge over Christmas and New Year, which is 30p for each additional 270 yards.

In a report to committee, a number of journey scenarios was presented that showed the likely increase would be around the 7% mark, with some journeys a little above that and some below.

The rise would depend on the number of people making the journey and whether it was on a weekday or at the weekend.

The fares will be advertised next week, with a one-month objection period. If there are no objections, the fares will apply from early November. If some are raised, November 29 is the earliest date for the fares

I wonder if that will be before or after they increase their fees :)

The word on the rank is that sets will be going in if the offices do this
