Tories to ditch insane bus lane
Friday, 1 October 2010
Labour's hated M4 bus lane is to be re-opened to ALL traffic, we can reveal.
Gridlocked drivers often look on frustrated as buses are able to sweep past them on the motorway.
The lane runs from Heathrow Airport into London and was the brainchild of former Transport Secretary John "Two Jags" Prescott.
The M4 - the main road to the capital from the West - is often reduced to two lanes for cars because of it.
It was even dubbed the "Blair Lane" after former PM Tony Blair used it to pass stationary traffic in a limo for "security reasons".
Next Monday, Transport Secretary Philip Hammond will announce the bus lane - also used by black cabs and motorbikes - is to go.
He will tell the Tory conference: "Nothing is more symbolic of Labour's war on the motorist than the M4 bus lane. From the end of December until the Olympics it will be suspended."
The lane will be shut to motorists again during the 2012 Games and used to ferry athletes and officials.
Mr Hammond plans to "scrap it permanently" after the Olympics. It was first enforced in 1999.
