does anybody know what the average cost of a private hire operators license is in the UK?

and is it usually a flat fee or does it depend on the number of vehicles you operate?

as ours is a flat fee of £203.00 and this allows any tom dick and harry to open up a firm.

Our council gives them out like hot cakes, everybodies operating from home and the fares have plummeted.

It varies throughout the country, but, private hire has never been regulated so every Tom Dick or Harry can get a licence

How can a license fee of £203 be justified? For what reason is it that much?

That's cheap.

Brum has a top rate of about £1,200 last time I heard.

I heard Sandwell is £500

Lichfield is £40 (1 car) not sure how it rises per vehicle

its all a lot for a A4 piece of paper.....

I note the comments of James Button in TAXIS – Licensing Law and Practice.

The ability of a council to recover licence fees in relation to Operators appears to be restricted to the flat fee of £25 provided in Section 70(2) c.

I would assume that the fees quoted in all of that section have been upgraded over the 36 years since the Act came into being.

Had they not been, there would have been numerous challenges to licensing fees in general over the years.

I would think that the twenty-five pounds quoted in that section for all licence fees was a starting point back in 1976/77.

Fees charged must be reasonable and no more than sufficient in the aggregate, in respect of S70, to cover the Council’s costs in whole or in part.

While the question of what is ‘reasonable’ can only be resolved by challenge, it seems clear that ‘costs’ charged to accounts to be recovered by licence fee income must be commensurate with the actual and necessary expenditure of human and material resources.

It follows that the Council must be able to demonstrate that those costs charged directly or by apportionment can be identified as being relevant and proportionate

Although a council has a statutory power to levy a fee this does not give it an absolutely free hand in relation to the scale of the fee that is levied.the impact of any increase upon the livelihood of those affected has to be taken into account,as does the scale of the increase.CONSULTATION must take place with interested parties,whether this is a statutory requirement or not, and results of that consultation must be considered by the council before the decision is made.it is important that any consultation is done fairly and the results considered properly by the council.ANY suggestion that the cosultation is a sham would be grounds for an application for leave to seek a judicial review of the final decision.

You might be able to still get licenced up in Berwick as a hack then work as PH in your area, for around £100 I think it was, all completely legal as long as you work as PH from an office
