I know this is a provocative subject, but, will you please explain to me the reasons why you believe private hire should not be allowed to use the bus lanes

My own opinion is that PH should be considered for being able to use Taxi Lanes in their own borough but not in the adjoining LA areas or further afield.

As "Public Transport" a Taxi should be able to use all Taxi Lanes.

There has been the odd problem in the past, I'm not aware of any currently, where the overly rich have "PH Plated" their car, paid a local operator to be on the books, then had the run of the Taxi Lanes.

BTW, some people call Taxi Lanes "Bus Lanes".

I have none, and it's a disgrace that a) all taxi/PH can't use all bus lanes, and b) that in some areas taxis can use them but not PH.

We only have one bus lane in the whole borough it's about 100 meters long and is only for buses (and boy racers trying out their new turbo dump valve)

so blatting along a bus lane im supposed to know the exact point at which i need to swerve into the next lane or risk a fine and/or points?

also, a hack out of area can use a bus lane but only really has PH status...

We have two bus lanes for buses only; But you sometimes see the naughty boys from a neighbouring borough to the south using one particular lane!

Easily done with PCO (London).

Make an appointment, then bring your V5, MoT (<12 months old), insurance certificate and tax disc.

For £114 a year your car will then be congestion charge exempt.

As a Hack, bus lanes are very confusing in our area.

Middlesbrough, allow only hacks to use bus lanes, 2 mile from Boro,

Stockton do not allow either hacks or PH to use the bus lanes, a mile or two further up the road;

Hartlepool allow both hacks and PH to use bus lanes, a further mile or so the other way,

Darlington allow only hacks.

I know of two drivers who have been fined for getting it wrong, apparently not knowing is not a defence.

Clarification:

If the signs say 'taxi' a HC can use them regardless of where they are licensed.

If the signs say 'local taxis' only locally licensed HC can use them.

Sorry, teaching Granny to suck eggs.

Because HC charge for waiting time in traffic & Ph don't.

However, if a PHV is fitted with a fare meter, then that is different & as a HD driver I would support any PH with a fare meter using bus lanes.

Otherwise I would not, because as a general rule PH drivers don't value their time in traffic & so don't charge the passenger for it.

And what happens if it's a WAV but the ramps are broken; can that vehicle still use the bus lanes?

:D :D :D :D

If the ramps are broken, it shouldn't be used as a taxi until it's fixed

I know that; but let's say the driver is very naughty?

What makes a taxi "public transport" and private hire not when considering it's access to bus lanes? For this discussion my reference to ph is that of the 'taxi' variety and not the occasional use variety such as limo's etc
