Taxi Driver Online

Hi everyone

My name is Chris and I work for TomTom, I have taken great interest in reading the forum regarding the drivers view point on Satnavs, especially TomToms and also the problems drivers encounter on a day to basis as well as some nightmare situations!

I've started this topic to help anyone who owns a TomTom or is looking to buy a satnav with any queries they have or would like a bit more information on them. I may add I can't really help with techincal problems but can offer advice on who to contact to resolve them.

A unique feature of a TomTom is our Live services which include:

HD Traffic - live traffic information streamed directly to the device and updated every 2 minutes, saving you time and petrol money!

Mobile Safety Camera alerts - The device is linked to the Road Angel database and receives information on proposed sites for mobile cameras

Google Search - Very helpful if your customer doesn't know exactly where they are going or want to go to an obscure destination!

if you could guarantee me up to date accurate maps then i'd be sold

but the last tom tom i used was missing streets built up to 4/5 years previously

All TomToms come with a Latest Map Guarantee, as soon as you receive your device, plug it into your computer and it will download the latest Map available (these come out 4 times a year) You can then purchase a new map when you feel it necessary to, be it 6 months later or 2 years later.

All our units also have Mapshare facilities, where you can edit the map yourself, if for example you find a road is closed, you can mark this on your device and it will remember this for future routing, you can then unblock it yourself when it is free again. Mapshare information can also be uploaded onto the computer and shared with other drivers and likewise you can download information provided by other people.

I have the new live 1000 and its a great bit of kit.

Tom Tom hasn't got quite a few roads round here yet plus there's a few roads that need updating because they've been blocked off.

It's funny seeing the HGV's with Tom Tom going down a road that goes nowhere because their Sat Nav is telling them to.

I would like to see an exchange system put in place, where those folk who don't know how to update there SD card maps possibly by post
Also speed camera updates are available for free from loads of places on the web so why charge for them

Why don't Tomtom use Navteq instaed of Teleatlas?
Navteq is much more upto date and more detailed.
Plus, spelling mistakes which makes it awkward to find some places.
A few years ago there was a Navteq map for Tomtom and it worked a hell of a lot better than the so-called lastest maps available now.

May I suggest a map reporter like Navteq have then if we see an obvious mistake, we the people out n about using your system, can tell you about it ?

tom lastest unit are on a closed system , means you cannot add third party POI from other souces.

until then i shall not even think about bying a tom tom

I use TomTom GO Live 940 with the traffic. Works great, no problems so far.

Garmin products are just so much better IMHO.

Thanks for your feedback guys, just to address a few of the questions and comments that have come up. With regards to the maps used, TomTom acquired tele atlas in 2008, where as navteq i believe is owned by Nokia, hence the reason we used Tele Atlas.

With regards to incorrect roads, as I mentioned if you do find a road that is closed, you can use the Mapshare facility to block this road and then upload this information to 'TomTom Home' and exchange this information with your fellow users.

As for POI, although it is a closed system you can request POI files on the website and also search for ones created by other users. Also with the safety cameras I cannot comment on the quality of the data which can be downloaded elsewhere, but specifically with TomTom and our Live devices, not only will your device be updated wirelessly with new positions but will also receive information from the Road Angel network with regards to the proposed locations of mobile cameras.

I hope this helps answer some of your questions.

Mr (I presume) TT_Chris, you didn't say if you thought Tom Tom was better than Garmin or any of the competitors - though I suppose we can take your position on this for granted.

I still think Garmin are so much better that I would not even consider Tom Tom.

Bit like as a full grown adult, LTI (or LTC if that's who they are now) vehicles are not in the running for viable replacement WAV cabs for me.

Tom Tom are OK for the general public, a professional driver needs something better. When the Tom Tom leads the public up a blind alley they can ask a Taxi driver for directions.
