I'm going to open a can of worms here with drivers all over the country regarding medicals.

When a driver suffers a heart attack should his HC licence be suspended until his "own" doctor decides whether he's fit to drive or not?

The reason I'm asking is, a driver I know had a heart attack 7 weeks ago, he's been back at work for over 2 weeks still driving as though nothings wrong.

Our lot let you go anywhere for medicals as long as it's done by a doctor so this driver can keep his illness secret from the doctor who's doing the medical.

This is not the 1st time it's happened round here, many drivers are driving with heart problems etc etc.

We need to get the medicals back to the drivers own doctors and not a doctor where you can lie about your past and present illnesses.

His own doctor should say he is safe, and that should be confirmed by a council appointed specialist.

That's not being done with him being back at work so soon.

i think its 4 weeks before you can drive

have you noticed that when you go in to see a doctor he/she has the pc switched on, has access to hospital records and i think now most medical records have now gone on line

I had my medical a few weeks ago with my own doctor and he didn't even know that I was a diabetic. Who signs the prescriptions?

DVLA and Insurers need to be told too

I had a medical early this year and the doctor asked how my giving up smoking was going.

I replied that it was going very well, in fact so well that I have never had a fag in all my life.

So why should a Taxi licencing medical be any different to a DVLA group 2 medical?

One of my drivers was told that it was 12 months for a stroke.

He got told wrong

The DVLA (Driving and Vehicle Licensing Agency) has strict guidelines about who may and may not drive. If, after that time, you have made a full recovery, and your doctor passes you as fit to drive, then you can resume driving and you do not need to inform the DVLA. Discuss this with your GP or Consultant.

Well since this guy has had a heart attack and not a "stroke" it wouldnt be up to his doctor to decide when he can drive again, that would be decided by the DVLA.
Does his LA know he has had a heart attack?
