Carlisle council bans sex aid adverts on city taxis

City councillors have banned an advertisement for a website selling sex aids from appearing on Carlisle taxis.

They say the advert for the site might cause offence.

Local businessmen Frank Sutherland and David Graham set up the website to supply sex aids and invite bookings for Ann Summers-style parties, where same-sex groups can buy their products.

They applied to advertise on a taxi but fell foul of the city council’s guidelines, which prohibit adverts with “sexual or controversial texts” and those “likely to offend public taste”.

The application was refused by the council’s regulatory panel.

Its chairman, Conservative councillor David Morton said: “We live in a fairly liberated society but what we are here to do is represent the views of the public.

“We have to consider what the views of the majority of people out there are.

“I do find [the advert] is in breach of the council’s policy. It is controversial and misleading and likely to encourage people to be taken somewhere they didn’t intend to go because of the nature of the advert.”

The advert would have had a background of roses with the words: “The new vibe in town – www.sexualhealing.co”.

A second advert would give two phone numbers for party bookings with the wording: “We will give you a BUZZ”.

Mr Sutherland told the panel: “We’re trying to open people’s eyes and take away the seedy side of sex. Ann Summers has a shop in town selling exactly the same products that we sell on the website.”

He said the website would soon include a section for amputees and the disabled, and products for women who have had cervical cancer, to help them have a full sex life.

He added: “Sex shouldn’t be looked down on as dirty and hidden away in the back streets. All we’re trying to do is heal the public’s perception of sex aids and sexual healing.”

Mr Sutherland said after the meeting: “Carlisle City Council needs to open their eyes a little bit and come into the 21st century.”
