Black cab drivers in Coventry are continuing their strike in a dispute with the council over the number of available ranks in the city.

Drivers said there were not enough, and colleagues have been given parking tickets when they park elsewhere.

The police and city council have until recently been lenient but some drivers were given tickets on Friday prompting drivers to go on strike.

The council said it would look at introducing more ranks.

Unions, the council and West Midlands Police have been holding negotiations to try to resolve the issue.

'Introduce cap'

Taxi driver Imran Zaman said the strike action would continue indefinitely until there was a result.

"We understand it is against the law to park on double yellow lines but we need a lot more rank spaces so we can legally work," he said.

Councillor Lyndsley Harvard, cabinet member for city services, said many cabs congregated in the city centre instead of using ranks in the suburbs.

He said they had held talks with the Taxi Association, and the council would also look at introducing a cap on the number of taxis.

But parking tickets will still be issued to cab drivers who "over-rank", misuse ranks or park illegally, he added.

This happens here quite a lot. The taxis rank in the 2 main town centres so the outer town zones don't get coverage. I understand why they do this but efforts should be made so people get used to seeing taxis on the outer town ranks and perhaps trade in these areas could be built up. I know it doesn't solve the problem of the lack of ranks in town but at least the taxis can then say they are covering all the rank spaces and there still are not enough

a few well placed touts on the rank handing out PH business cards should go well (not taking bookings of course, that would be illegal)

Well done lads!!!

Four days off work on a point of principle.

Shame the rest of the country is not on strike too, supporting this action for more ranks & spaces, which is by far the greatest 'beef' the cab trade has nationally!!

Time we had a national four days of action abouts ranks & rank spaces.

But I suppose there's as much chance of that as there is of knitting fog!!!

Coventry taxi drivers call off strike

Jan 11 2011

TAXI drivers in Coventry have called off their strike.

They stopped working on Friday night after a cab driver was arrested in Pepper Lane, near Coventry Cathedral, for parking illegally.

More black cab drivers joined the strike over the weekend as they complained that too many taxi licences were being handed out by Coventry City Council.

They also say there is a shortage of taxi ranks for drivers to park.

This afternoon cab drivers went back to work after the council offered to carry out an investigation into the issue.

Is illegal parking an arrestable offence? Or did the driver go off on one and get himself arrested for a breach of the peace?

Excuse me

When they obtained thier plates did they knew there was no limit on hack plates numbers?, did they knew how many rank places there were? but the still went ahead and plated as hackneys?

so whose to blame?

if they are that bothered will they accept a regulated USE of the rank by plate number? (0-100 and 101-200on alternate days and nights or some such?).........no, thought not

it's not even illegal in most areas. It's a 'contravention.' TMA 2004.

Works well for 100% of PH drivers.

You lot must be doing something wrong if you need the nanny state to hold your hands.

Well TBH I do, I just get the hump when others decide that all PH ever do is wait around the corner from the rank trying to poach street work.

The reason why PH are taking over is because the other side is so weak, and in restricted areas only concerned with keeping plate premiums.

plus the public prefer to travel in a vehicle whose design is of this millenium, not the last maybe?...and PH go to the punter, not the other way round

ranks should be done away with and the whole system shook up
