There are some who think that they should in fact be "sectioned".

Taxi strike halted after crunch talks

TAXI drivers claimed victory this week after staging a five-day strike over licensing rules and illegal parking.

Cabbies went out on strike and staged a protest outside the Council House on Friday when a driver was cautioned for parking on double yellow lines in Pepper Street, near Coventry Cathedral.

Talks between Coventry Taxi Association representatives and council chiefs took place over the weekend and this week after drivers vented frustrations over a number of long-running disputes, and the strike was finally called off on Tuesday afternoon.

Cabbies claimed victory after the council pledged to review a number of the drivers' concerns, including the number of new taxi licences issued by the council and a shortage of spaces at city taxi ranks.

Speaking to The Observer, Imran Zaman, chairman of Coventry Taxi Association, said he was now confident the council planned to freeze the issuing of new licences, while issuing drivers with three-year licences instead of licences valid for just a year.

"We have had very good indications from council officers who recognise the problems we face in Coventry," Mr Zaman said.

"As long as the council sticks to its word and enforces these changes, there will be no more strikes and we would like to thank the council, police and the public for supporting us."

He added the protests were justified as a shortage of taxi ranks in the city forced drivers to park illegally.
"There are 900 taxis but only 130 spaces and we were promised answers on these problems three years ago," Mr Zaman said.

Coun Lindsley Harvard, the council's city services spokesman, said he was delighted the strike had come to an end.
"We had a very productive meeting with the chair and secretary of the Coventry Taxi Association and have reached agreement on a series of points," he added.

"Their issues will be raised at a meeting later this month.

"We'll also be setting up additional meetings between council officers and the taxi association to ensure we move forward quickly."

But Mohemmad Qasim - a taxi driver for five years - warned drivers were prepared to stage further strikes if the council failed to act.

"This has been going on long enough now," he said. "The council can't keep brushing the issues under the table.

"Taking more action is something we're prepared to do if necessary."
