I do not think you would like to tell someone in a wheelchair that you cannot take them, its bad enough telling people you cannot take five .Also many Wheelchair users do not have cares what then.

You have lots of rank based hirings for the wheelchair bound in Dundee?

CC

Not the point, some Wheelchair users use ranks and i have seen on a numerous occasions the driver in Question getting Shxt its not right.

I am glad that it is a personal view because i for one would expect the NTA to stick up for there members who just might in the future be made to put a wav on because there district does not have the percentage that the Government wants. Then through no fault of there own are unable to assist wheelchair passengers.

I am so disappointed in you CC someone in your position should be sticking up for disabled taxis drivers your views are a blow and so disappointing and i would think a shock to NTA members

You are entitled to your opinion.

The way I see it is that Dundee is a deregulated area, if it wants all of its taxis to be saloon vehicles, thus allowing those still on PH to simply transfer over, thats fine by me, I hope you get the rank space.

Personally, I think there's areas other than Dundee, and Carlisle for that matter, if a person who is disabled wishes to enter the job, they should in my view be aware of what the licensing policy is.

My wifes grandmother was blind.......following this I would seriously hope she would be granted a cab license.

lets not be blinded by something huh;

Exemptions from the duties - Section 166 allows licensing authorities to exempt drivers from the duties to assist passengers in wheelchairs if they are satisfied that it is appropriate to do so on medical grounds or because the driver’s physical condition makes it impossible or unreasonably difficult for him or her to comply with the duties.

I didnt write it!

So why don't you explain how, I am exempt form wheelchairs? I just submitted a little risk assessment, and ka-pow, gone.

Oh look, no wheelchairs, as if by magic ...

I dont write acts of parliament, but as I stated, if you wish to ask the question, perhaps you should email the people responsible?

Yes, but as we both know, your talking pap, your council have a pretty [edited by admin]* WAV policy which allows people to gain licenses for sheds.

Bruce has been a taxi driver for years and through no fault of his own is now unable to assist wheelchair passengers into his cab like he did before his assault.Lets just hope none of the NTA members suffer the same fate because it looks like they will get no sympathy from the NTA. your comments about your Grandmother are so pathetic i will let NTA members decide if you are fit to represent them poor show CC you have certainly shown you true colours

Wow, I wasnt expecting that type of response in a debate you started.

I'm sure the NTA will sack me if they feel the same way as yourself.

As for the 'true colours' comment, I do take that quite personal, because I was offering an opinion, just as I offer an opinion on virtually everything.

Sorry you feel that way.

If those are your views then I see little point further in contributing to this thread.

I agree and maybe NTA members should join the T&G unite as it looks like they will represent you better if you become a disabled taxi driver

You mean by that dont approach a council and insist on exemption from duties for their member, which would at least would mean he could carry on working, or as Gary describes, where he suggests even that aint necessary because of the Health & Safety Act?

In my manor it is a 100% WAV policy.

That's fine, that's what the rules are.

I do an awful lot of wheelchair work - that's fine too. My passengers are happy, I make money.

If I was temporarily or, God forbid, permanently disabled I would want to carry on as a Hackney driver. I'd have to have an "exemption" and that provision is available - I'd use it.

A few months ago I could say that I had never turned down any job, ever. That is no longer the case. I now refuse to carry any wheelchair that can't be secured and I also refuse to carry wheelchair occupants who refuse to be secured.

As to further up the thread, if I am unable to assist with loading a wheelchair and the carer is capable, should an accident occur then my insurance surely can't be claimed against unless it's because of a failure of equipment, a broken ramp or defective restraint to give two examples.

A lot of people here have exemptions from loading wheelchairs and drive wavs.Usually go to the doctors and get a exemption certificate.
