TalkTalk trials free wireless broadband in taxis

The internet service provider is testing MiFi access in cabs in Birmingham, London, Manchester, Edinburgh and Glasgow.
TalkTalk has launched a trial of free wireless broadband in taxis operating in some of the UK's biggest cities.

The broadband bundle provider's communications director Mark Schmid revealed the project, which offers a MiFi service to users, will be available in a "selected number" of cabs in Birmingham, London, Manchester, Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Explaining the initiative, Mr Schmid said it will enable people to enjoy "a smoother connection on their internet-enabled devices" as they travel across the cities.

He urged people living in or visiting these areas to get involved in the trial scheme, commenting: "If you see one of these taxis around, hop in and make the most of the MiFi if you can."

TalkTalk is advertising on the side of 400 cabs in these five cities, although not all of these vehicles will have the free mobile Wi-Fi hotspots.

This news comes after a similar project from 3 Mobile saw "human hotspots" equipped with MiFi devices and sent across the UK to bring wireless broadband access to more people.
