Suspended jail sentence for taxi driver
A TAXI driver who attacked a schoolboy he thought had thrown a “missile” at his car has been given a suspended sentence.
Zuber Natha lost his temper and chased a group of boys who had been throwing objects at his taxi in Mere Hall car park, Bolton, on February 5, last year.
Bolton Crown Court heard he cornered the 16-year-old victim and punched him in the head and body.
He received significant injuries, including a tooth knocked out and needed dental work.
Natha, aged 29, of Blackburn Road, Bolton, pleaded guilty to assault, and was sentenced to eight months in prison suspended for 12 months.
He must also complete 140 hours’ unpaid work and pay £500 compensation.
Elizabeth Dudley-Jones, defending, said: “He is a truly upstanding member of society. There was a complete lapse in judgement that evening.”
Judge Timothy Clayson said: “What you did was very wrong, and you accept you took the law into your own hands and caused some significant injuries.
“You have suffered from depression as a consequence of your wrongdoing.
“Your job is at risk and you’re a family man who does a lot of voluntary work, which shows that, ordinarily, you are a lawabiding citizen.
“While a prison sentence is called for, it is one that, on this occasion, can be suspended.”
