Well I've been waiting a lot longer for your answer to this

http://taxi-driver.co.uk/phpBB2/viewtop ... c&start=20

do you not see a problem with the butcher, the baker and the candlestick maker having taxi licences, when the taxi driver can't get one?

That question was answered.

That question was avoided.

Very convenient for you.
I'm sure it wasn't locked on account of the question.
Don't be shy now. Answer it here.

The taxi driver already has a license.

Not what was asked.

He may have a taxi driver's licence but not a taxi licence, which was what I asked.

Why? You could own a cafe......but it doesnt mean you have to be a cook.

Some people must live in very strange places, one driver one vehicle.....all very good, but what happens if the one drivers one vehicle has an accident and is going to be off the road for a week?

Are the drivers family to starve or should someone rent the guy a cab?
Skip would lead us to believe the guy should go and work for another owner driver, on a paid by the hour basis......somehow I don't think that idea will take off. Indeed, many owner drivers are owner drivers purely because they don't want someone else driving their cab.

People seem to dismiss the fact that many people cannot afford to own their own cabs, some people don't want the responsibility of owning and would rather rent....a situation where they can simply hand the keys back when it suits them.

I cannot believe the blinkered attitude of some on this site.

A simple yes or no would have done.

Interesting comparison though, since the cook has the choice of opening his own cafe if he wishes. Nobody is saying he can't.
The taxi driver isn't so lucky though, is he?

Also, cooking isn't a licensed activity, is it?
Neither is cafe owning, unless alcohol is sold.
Perhaps you are intimating that the taxi trade should be similarly unlicensed?

I have no problem with this arrangement, if it is by choice.
Restriction makes what should be a choice into Hobson's choice.
Not a safety net for owner drivers but a captive market for plateholders.

Are drivers who are not also owners members of the NTA directly?

Yes there's plenty down here who aren't owners. They are pleased with the support they have received from the NTA

Nobody is telling the taxi driver he cant open up his own taxi company, it's just in regulated areas he has to pay. Albeit, the taxi driver is better off with a more assured income and business certainty.

You seem to have altered your question in your second paragraph.

Not at all.
Just pointing out that you compared a licensed industry with an unlicensed one.
Should any conclusion be drawn from that?

In answer to your first point I did state;

it's just in regulated areas he has to pay. Albeit, the taxi driver is better off with a more assured income and business certainty.

Not at all I compared one business with another......that aside, if the place is minging......it would be closed.

You seem to be confusing the driver with the owner here.

One which doesn't get restricted and doesn't need licences with one which does. A poor comparison at best.

And very likely reopened the following day under someone elses name......
