Evidence, particularly in areas that are all WAV already?

Wirral was one, Norwich I think was another, do you want me to carry on, or are you going to make an effort and find out yourself?

Prices DO vary dug, but the amounts you mention are well below the norm.

If your paying £340 a week nightshift then you either need to renegotiate or find another cab

Average Ive paid 6 nights is £250-£280 including a Friday & Saturday night

Also £33 for 100 miles? 33p per mile I drive a txII auto and yes fuel is scandalous an a real killer at the moment but even for 100 miles it works out at £22-£25

Think the highest rate per mile was 30p per mile but even then that was during the extreme weather conditions in December when the engine was never switched off, wheels were losing traction in the snow and the heating front and rear was on full blast

Just thinking, do you drive with the overdrive on or off. If you have the overdrive on (akin to motorway driving) it uses less revs and can make 25p per mile shift go down to 21p/22p. I've did a few different personal experiments doing this and it makes a big difference! You lose a bit of performance/power but then again it is a taxi not a rally car

Oddly enough, in the coach industry, the IR would not allow the drivers to be self employed in their rules.
Because

1, Drivers MUST have COMPLETE freedom to choose what work they do. (As radio companies discipline you if you refuse work, that is not the case)

2, Drivers MUST work for more than one company (Even if it is casual work) (Most Edinburgh taxi drivers work the same motor all year, so that rule is not met either).

In either of these cases IR will INSIST that the driver is employed.

They have only clamped down on this in the last few years, so maybe it could be something that is on it's way to the taxi trade in due course.

A lot of people are paying that for 5 nights, with a Friday OR Saturday.

That's a big IF.
Around here it's 5 years for a saloon taxi or PH & 10 years for a WAV.
Was the same before derestriction.

5 years & 10 years? You wouldn't get many years work out of them here with that rule. Perhaps you need to have your vehicle standards improved for 1st licence

I'm sure your aware of Jim Taylor, airport 1, in fact you sound very much like him

Anywho, as mr Taylor and his pal skull have said in the past (and I'm paraphrasing here "if derestriction means guys can't handle the pressure of the trade then when derestriction happens they will be phased out as they can't hack it"

Maybe you can't handle it airport 1. To me your figures are slightly exaggerated to counter balance the arguement. Maybe you should just leave the trade and stack shelves in tesco if you think it will make you more money.

Dug, is either a servile driver who likes to think his is being looked after or a lying [edited by admin]* of an owner. Rentals with the hours you need to make a decent wage are not that easy to come by.

I know drivers who travel all over Edinburgh, driving more than one taxi to ensure they get the hours, they need to earn a living.

All this shi* needs to stop, it's every man for himself.

Oh and btw, I know guys who have lost their weekend nights because the owner wants the shifts.

If I thought I could get away with it, pricks like you Dug, would be burnt at the stake.

Come to think of it......if he's earning just about £1K per week in a quiet January, during a recession, I really think he should consider buying the cab and plate.

If he could still put £300 per week to one side, it would be paid off in no time.

Are you fu*king mad?

I know owners and drivers who can't pay their tax bill simply because they don't know where the money is coming from. One guy just went into overdraft to pay his bill, 6% over base, terrified the tax man will come for his house. And I know of plenty of others that want to sell up out of desperation. They don't know how long they can last.

This trade is a fu*ked, and it's only going to get worse.

Buy in, you've got to be having a fecking laugh

This guy is earning a grand a week in a bad month, Alistair told us he was earning £1500 per week last year I think.

If things are as bad as you say, can I take it that owners arent actually having champagne lifestyles, as the airport1 claimed?

Indeed, if things are as bad as that......he maybe get a cab and plate cheaper.

Gross - £977, which doesn't mean jack shi* with things are getting worse. You don't buy in order to become less desperate in the short term hoping you might make it long term.
