Dangerous defects discovered after taxi cab crashed
A TAXI driver has been fined after a police check revealed the cab he was driving was dangerously defective.
Burton Magistrates' CourtMohammed Zaheer, 33, of Waterloo Street, pleaded guilty to three counts of defects and was also landed with three penalty points on his licence when he appeared at Burton Magistrates’ Court yesterday.
Police had originally been called to an accident in Horninglow Street, Burton, at around 6.45am on October 8, involving Zaheer’s Fiat Scudo minibus.
Giles Rowden, prosecuting, told the court: “Due to the state of Zaheer’s vehicle, the police decided to undertake a check and discovered the defects.”
Officers made a thorough check and found the grooves of the tread pattern of a tyre fitted to the rear nearside wheel of the vehicle ranged from a depth of just 0.8mm to 1.7mm. The depth has to be at least 1.6mm throughout a continuous band.
Police also found the centre seatbelt was not working properly and would not restrain a passenger if the vehicle was involved in an accident.
Further checks revealed a rear brake light was also not working.
Neil O’Driscoll, defending, said: “This particular vehicle wasn’t actually his but he knows you are responsible for that vehicle when driving it.
“He is a self-employed taxi driver with four children and this vehicle was being used as a taxi.”
Magistrates decided to fine Zaheer separately for each offence, giving him a £165 fine for having insufficient tread, £80 for the seatbelt, and £80 for the brake light.
He was also ordered to pay £85 court costs and a victim surcharge of £15.
These fines had been reduced because of his early guilty plea, and he was also given three points on his licence.
