What gets me is, why don't taxi drivers all over the UK set up a consortium and self insure like the bus companies and Post Office?? It's got to be cheaper than going through an insurance company?

All you'll seperate need is your public liability insurance which again with money in the bank will cover it.

It's just a thought.

Extensive self-insurance has significant benefits, but is also an altogether riskier (and potentially expensive) business. In order to prove that they are in a position to completely self-insure, motor for example, a fleet operator would be required to deposit £500,000 with the Accountant General of the Senior Courts. This large up-front cost has tended to discourage smaller businesses and has meant that self-insurance was generally associated with large organisations.

I have sympathy for your position.

I'm with BG Insurance, they did me a reasonable quote this year;

I would also enquire at Penk insurance;

£800 last year Best quote this year £1200

Protected No claims bonus is a con, they still load the premium because I had a minor prang. If I had known that I would have settled cash but I assumed protected no claims bonus meant just that...... Wrong.

One of the first principles of any insurance is that the losses of the few fall on the premiums of the many. Not long ago Tradex Insurance who bought Westminster (orginally set up by taxi drivers in London) in 2008, got stuffed for what was then a record claim payout. It was £13,000,000! Even with reinsurance, that wll take a fair few £800's to recoup.

One of our PH clients had an accident 4 days after paying his £794 premium (this was in 2009). He hit another car head on, we speculate he fell asleep at the wheel, the claim is already booked at £261,000. Front seat passenger who was wearing a seatbelt suffered facial fractures and lacerations. The real killer though is as always the legal fees in sorting this out.

A couple of years back we had a hackney driver get shafted by the courts when a drunk jumped over railings to run across the road. The taxi driver, I recall, was deemed to be doing 33mph in a 30 mph limit so his insurance co copped the lot. The drunk ended up a paraplegic and insurance co had a bill for £300,000.

Tap the car in front at walking pace and the ins co will reseve best part of £5k!

if you drive a taxi/ph and have someone hit you from behind, this is what you do

get the insurance details off the "at-fault ramraider"

ring HIS broker (not YOURS)

when they start telling you to ring yours tell em ok but your a taxi driver, teh car is your living..........listen to em panic

inside 2 weeks i can guarantee you will have a cheque for the repairs or car

well it worked for me!

That's a very good approach. Its win win all round. These days an insurance co that knows it has a "guilty" driver will welcome the chance to intervene and take control of any claim being made against them.

Some ins cos are reducing the excess in the event of a fault claim to encourange early reporting. So, if you are unfortunate enough to rear end someone, reporting to your co quickly means your co can provide the self drive hire car, send the third party car to their own garage for repair and hopefully fend off any spurious injury claims. All keeping costs down.

The simple reason premiums are going up is cos claims costs are out of control. If you are at fault, confess, report and you will save your co money which in the long run should help stem the outrageous rise in premiums.

thier panic is induced by the "loss of earning" syndrome, whilst mine was a 2 week claim+pay at £XXX/day, under normal "lets drag it out" claim delays it could have been 3 months at £XXX/day

I provided one of my stretched limousines to an insurance company whilst one was being fixed. I received £200 + VAT per day for this and the limo was out for 6 months. I hate to think what the total cost of this claim was.
