Brokers keen to make a sale will take a lower commision to reduce the cost to the punter

my policy states "!insurance cost £1360" but im only paying £1300 cos i told the broker i could get it elsewhere for £1250....

If you were offered £1250 elsewhere, why are you still paying £1300?

you should know me by now....

the £1250 was either 1 lump sum, or 10xDDMs with a £250 fee
the £1300 was 3 equal payments over 3 months with no fee

mind you, i wasnt asked to prove the £1250 quote, i coulda been fibbing PLUS the £1300 included PL which costs me £150 a year till now

win/win i think

Question for 2 jobs.
Daughter had a prang with a lamppost in November.
Car was a right off but she had gap insurance.
Insurance finally settled on a figure 2 weeks ago
Gap made up the difference but there was still a shortfall of £200
could you explain why and if anything can be done so she does not have to pay this
All moneys went to the finance company to clear it off

Hope that helps.

Thanks very much for that, very informative.

Kind of confirms my approach to insurance though, which has always been to try not to think about it too much.

A bit like buying a lot of things these days though - computers, moblie phones, cars etc - so many variables to consider that it often seems best to not think about it too much :D

If the shortfall is £200 dead, best guess is there may be an excess coming in to play somewhere. Could be the gap policy doesn't cover the "own damage" excess on the main policy or there is actually an excess on the gap policy.

I would certainly be seeking a full explanation from the gap insurers. Happy to share thoughts if you get more info.

Caledonian Cabbie

Bang on there. I think we are all probably of an age and wise enough to know not every cabbie is out to fleece the fare paying public as some of my passengers seem to believe, nor is every insurance broker or for that matter any other business providing a product or service. I guess the difficulty is finding which is which.

Just a general observation when accepting a "discount". It is worth checking the interest charged if paying by direct debit. Most of the installment plans are provided by companies separate from the actual insurance policy. The 2 most common are Close Premium Finance and the the other Premium Credit. I struggle to understand APR's and still like to know the "flat rate". If paying by instalments calculate the total cost. Some brokers charge for credit card payments, some don't etc etc.

Quick Q for 2 jobs.

Just got rid of my private car and no longer have need for insurance. Current insurer (Admiral) says my no claims discount remains valid for two years. Is this standard for all insurers or just certain ones ? It's over 15 years and I wouldn't like to lose it !

Yup, 2 years is normal now. Norwich Union, now Aviva did use to accept it up to 3 years old. Not sure if they still do.

One of the big problems has been the interchangability (is that a real word) bewteen NCB on differnt types of policy. Not all car insurers will take NCB earned on a taxi policy and likewise taxi insurers will will not give a like for like transfer from a private car ncb to taxi ncb. The latter makes a bit more sense I guess.

so i went from max NCB on a private car to commercial and lost most of it

then went from max NCB commercial vehicle to private hire and lost most of it

and if i go back to personal car i can guess what happnes to my NCB

if i was the suspicous type id smell a rat somewhere

the fact is if i havent made a claim........i havent made a claim!

Thanks 2 jobs.

It wasn't a taxi policy just my own private car. Had the problem with carrying over NCD to a taxi when I first put a cab on, 10 years NCD on a private motor - zero allowed for a cab !
