 Post subject: TX1 Starting Problems

I have a late tx1 51 plate. It only starts with my foot halfway on the accelerator after about 3 attempts and I have to rev the engine to get it run smoothly and from then on it runs like a dream. If however I turn it of it is difficult to start again also if I leave it ticking over on idle the engine will stall after about 15 mins. I've had it from new and the engines never miss a beat after some 160,000 miles. I had some panel damage to the near side (rear door skin and rear wing replaced) repaired. When I picked the cab up after a week in the repair shop the problems started with the engine. The repair shop said I need to get my injectors cleaned. It went for overhaul and sailed through. My garage put a new fuel priming pump on and checked the injectors all seemed to be ok. They suggested it could be the injector pump but have never heard of one breaking down. It feels like the engine is airlocking but there are no diesel leaks.
Can anybody help?

There could be no leaks showing but air can still force the fuel back to the tank, so every time you want to start it it has to be pumped back
get all the fuel pipes checked for tightness as they will have been undone to service the injector-es, and change the fuel filter for good measure

The engine is a 2.7 nissan. All the lines to the injectors are tight. Do you think it could be something to with the fuel tank or fuel lines from the tank to the primer pump, as the panel around the filler cap has been replaced ?

I would definately change the fuel filter and put maybe a additive in the fuel and take it for a good run/blast through

Get the injectors changed, it's not the biggest job in the world, and they'll need doing at some stage.

My old TX1 had them done at around 250K when the emissions kit was fitted in 2006, the engine did sound a lot smoother, and from what I can remember the fuel economy was better.

I've changed not only the fuel filter but the priming pump it attaches to and run injector cleaner through it and driven in 2nd gear at high revs for a good few miles.

if it had been a Duratorq id have suggested changing the cam and/or crank sensors and getting a PCM update but it isnt, so i wont

Don't spend any money before you check a few simple things.
1.. check the air filter... make sure it's clean.
2. get a gallon can with diesel in it... disconnect the feed to your fuel pump and replace it with a pipe to the gallon can.... take the Return pipe off your diesel pump and replace it with a pipe going to the gallon can..... try starting..... if your engine is running all right.. you will know there is a fault with your fuel lines.... or even a blocked filter that is in the centre of your fuel tank...
4. you might possibly have problems with your heater plugs... a simple way of testing is to disconnect them all.. then take a live wire from your batterie and gently stroke the top of the heater plug... if you can see little sparks you know the plug is working..
it could be something else... but try these First..ps.. you might also have a blocked fuel filter..

I,ve found the problem it was the fuel separator. That's the part that screws into the bottom of the fuel filter. Thanks for everyone's help.

That's what I'd call it but when you order the part from the supplier's they call it a fuel separator.

from my time on a tractor driver course im sure the correct term is something like "anglometer" (dont quuote me)

how can a water trap/tap be faulty?

still, its built into the fuel filter so not a worry
